    Hilbruks' sketchbook. Continually updated

Hi everyone. I've never posted any work here before, but I've been visiting the forum for several years, and the inspiration that I've gained is amazing. Some of the stuff here is mindbogling.

So here's my ferst attempts at coloring my drawings in photoshop. Done over the last few days. And again. Please comment and give me some constructive critisism. I need it badly. Thanks

    Trying to understand color

I'm trying to get to grips with colors, coloring, light, shadows. It's incredibly difficult. I think I understand the basics, but my mind seems a bit clogged at the moment. I know there's alot of things I could do to improve these, and I will try. Appreciate all feedback

More! Keep going! You've got some nice things going on here. I like your pencils and inks on paper especially well.

I'm amazed to see people still do preliminary sketches in blue line. Why is that? Are they still using the old photo processes for comics? Or are older illustrators just teaching it to younger ones?
I was once on the receiving end of a critique so savagely nasty, I marched straight out of class to the office and changed my major (sketchbook).

Wow, 3 posts and already a lot of progress. Well done man.
Love the traditional sketches and drawings, and the latest digitals show very much potential. Continue the color studies!

trying to get better at color

I'm trying to get better at both anatomy and color, but it's hard. I don't think that there's enough cotrast in the colors, and the lighting is quite tame, but it is just a tiny bit better than the last one I think.

Hi! You have some nice art here
Just a tip: when painting digitally, try to use a hard edges brush instead of a soft edged one. By using a hard edged brush, I find that I get much sharper lines, and more control over the painting.

A fine way to acquire better knowledge about colour, is to find multiple photos and start to sample colours from different places in the photo. You'll be amazed by this. At least I was. I found that colours tend to be way more desaturated then I used to think.

You can also do another exercise. Again, find a photo, but this time you're not going to sample the colours. Now you're going to try to pick the colours of the colour picker just by looking at the photo. After you have done this, then you can see how you attempt was compared to the reference. I learned a lot about colour by doing this last excercise.

    I particularly like these

    landscape: ruins

Here's a little speedpaint of a forest with a not so ruined ruin.
I think there's some good here, but I feel that it's not defined enough, and the brush is showing too much. But please tell me what to do here. I was inspired by Ead's sketchbook to try this again, cause I've tried before, and that went very badly.

wow. You just blew me the fuck away. I was like 'hmm he's ok' judging by your first post but everything else was like O_O.

KAY so here goes. A prof of mine told me that a coloured image is NOTHING without a good underdrawing(Lineart) and you definitely have that.

That's how I usually approach my colouring

You seem to have just about everything well on the way. The biggest thing I see is that your edges are very soft and that's why it looks so blurry and unfocused. Keep er up

    peace
So when you scan in your image to paint in PS create a new layer on top of it. And under layer functions set it to multiply (lets the lineart through while you colour over). On top of that create another layer for the palette and choose all your colours (this includes all tints, tones, shades of each respective colour). Do you have a colour wheel? if you don't google it or get one iunno. You used the red/green complimentary in one of your posts so I assume you ahve some knowledge in colour. If not, google colour harmonies and try learning them.

Anyways, in the multiply layer - fill your object in @ about 70% opacity and just roughly block in all your colours.

Then create a new layer and leave it @ normal. Paint using a hard edge brush and slowly go up in opacity from 70%-100% (You can change opacity quickly by pressing number keys while in the brush tool)

If you want to blend finely just use low opacities...it just takes time but try it.

Man! seriously. you have some amazing character concepts here. they would be perfect for some 3dzation or painting overs.

    and this one are great:

But trully most of your characters Id love to paint or do a 3d version!

    Hats off

Stoat: Thanks The blue pencil is because I like how it behaves. Cleaner than a regular pencil and esier to build good shapes without starting a new drawing.

Zenarion: The first post was done late 2005, so they are quite old, but the others are all recent. Will continue color studies, but that stuff is Hard. But it will pay off in the end like all other hard work

Guilemo: Thanks for the tips. Have tried some of your dvice, but no major results, but will post some of what I´ve done.

    Clodioz: Thank you

Ped454: Thanks, thats very nice to hear ^^ Will try your little tut.

Marioucci: If you want that, I would really like to see what you can do with it. And thanks for the kind words

MilesNoctis: Thanks I have alot of work to do on most, but at the moment what I want to focus on is anatomy (human and animal) and color. Hard but its more rewarding than anything the times you can see that, hey, it's lot better than the last one.

    I will post more soon.
I really appreciate the feedback everyone :

Hey man, thanks for stoppin' by my sb. Those are some damn sexy heads in this last post, as for your previous color experiments you've achieved a good wispy atmosphere but it's not to say certain areas couldn't stand a little tightening/more opaque modeling on the forms. I'm speaking directly to some of the headshots. Just turn the hardness on the brush up a little and mess around. Of course I also see there's some substantial time differences between the posts so let's see what these new heads would look like, I'm sure you'll blow our minds

MilesNoctis: Thanks You'll be as good and much, much better.

Flaskpost: Heads with personality is pretty much up to loosen your lines. I tend to draw faces much to rigid, wich is not good. But I'm trying to loosen up and that helps. And thanks a bunch

king-scribbles:Thanks alot. I will try to spread the little knowledge I have. I use alot of time to gain more knowledge from this forum also. Just a tip

TroyWilkerson: I know I have alot more to do on the coloring part, and the drawing for that matter. Thanks for the tips. I'll try to do some more coloring and drawing this weekend

    Have a nice weekend!

and another one I made this morning. I find it easier to color if the subject is possible to make a little abstract, and if I don't have to follow linework.

    Some wips

Here are some works in progress, as I like to say.
Have no idea if these will be finished, but I have to practice my coloring, so I threw a some very quick coloring on these two. So if I finish them they will be pillars of proof of my extreme persistence, or if I don't... Well, here they are:

    Sketches based on Pippi

At school we now have an assignment where we illustrate a story. The story is a small part of a Pippi Longstockings-book. We could change the story and the details of the story to our liking, so it's only loosly based on Pippi. Here's some concept art for the final illustrations which will be done in two weeks. ...I hope.
