    Passhunate's Sketchbook

Okay...This is my new sketchbook. I really want to get serious with making my art improve. Right now I am trying to learn how to apply studies and get more comfortable with photoshop. And my goal is to have a decent job when I get out of college. Yeah..........That's it and here is some stuff that I did this week. I will update when possible.

I finally got done with my lizard. Yay !. And I did a self portrait and a bunch of hands. They are getting a little better. I just need to apply them a lot more. And this lizard was for the crimson daggers bloodsport thingy. I wanted to get the basic structure and texture for it .

I'm loving that lizard! About the hand studies, I recommend paying attention the the physical build-up of the hand instead of just focusing on contours. For example, break up the fingers into simple spheres and cylinders and draw that instead of trying to match the contour of the hand pose your working on!
I can't wait to see more work!

Here are some one minute gesture drawings and some arms that I did from some photos. I'm trying to make my lines look more confident and trying to draw with my whole arm.

Here are some gestures and some poses that I did last week. Just been really lazy and trying to get out of it. I am going to try to update more often. But yeah........In the poses I am trying to get use to anatomy more. I draw it from observation then memory then I break it down into shapes then draw it again from observation and then I draw it from memory again. Thanks for taking a look.

Here are somethings that I did over the last couple of weeks. Trying to push anatomy a little more. And also trying to do things from memory.

I did a arm study that took me forever to do and then my computer turned off so I had to do it again. I also did a couple of other small studies of arms since they seem to be my main problem. And I did a couple of 30 sec gestures.I'm trying to get a lot more serious and will try to update more frequented thanks for taking a look

    Hey Passhunate,

Those head studies form #3 and gestures from #5 are good. Arms from #5...not so good. Watch those proportions , especially when studying form life/photos. I think you need to work on accuracy, rememebr to block in the big shapes before going to make details. Learning a measuring system is helpfull too.

    Keep drawing!

Nice studies, especially the heads and the gesture drawings. Try to think in terms of mass and structure, rather than just contour or outline, think about the anatomy studies you've done and apply those principles to your drawings from life.

HI!, took me awhile to get back to you. Good to see your pushing yourself.

Right know i think your digital rendering looks more confident than your lineworks.
The only thing i could add to whats already been said is dont worry about rendering your pencil drawings, concentrate purely on simplefying and lots of repetition!

These are some small studies and a few things from imagination. I tried to do a giant still life but the light source kept changing and I did it in multiple sessions. And I did this one hour glass study today.

    Lagarto: Thanks : )

Tea of Doom: Thanks for the advice. I will try to keep it in mind and work on it better and focus a lot more on proportions.

Hunin: Thank you. I trying to work more on form right now. Thanks for the advice.

    Lumens
: Yeah, I'm trying to get more confident in my lines.

Hey, thanks for stopping by and giving me a critique... very much appreciated.

You are doing some awesome stuff and can tell you are working hard at it. I see a lot of improvement which is great.

These last paintings looks sweet dude... The only major thing I see could improve that last one is to make sure your ellipses are accurate. Something looks off, whether it is the opening of the glass or the bottom... they don't quite match up right.

It looks like those hand studies are from life eh? I would check out the hand anatomy a bit more and see where are the bones and muscles are in the hand. If you have an understanding of what you are looking at it become much easier to "build" the hand you are looking at rather than just trying to see it. I find it helps to look at my hand and start with drawing where all the bones would be and then building the muscles on top while looking at my hand.

Anyways, I hope I was somewhat helpful. Keep up the good work... looks like you are doing what you need to be doing to improve!

Just did a quick paint over, I hope you don't mind... I am on my laptop and don't have photoshop on it so had to use MS paint and a laptop mouse (lol)... I think it gets the point across though.

One other thing I didn't mention was the shadow behind the glass... Normally cast shadows like that are a bit darker closer to where the object hits the ground and then fades out (I didn't take the time to try and fade using MS Paint)..... I would also add a bit of a darker line in front of the glass too where it meets the table as it is difficult for light to get in there!

    Hope this helps!

So I'm finally out of school and now have a lot more time to spend improving my artwork. I'm going to be working a lot harder now. It feels like time is just speeding up. And I would like to have a career after college so here are some studies I been working on. I hope you like them. And please critique me so that I can improve. Thanks.

    Kadin.T.Goldberg
: Thanks so much for the critique. It will help me in my further studies. I'm really thankful for it.

By the way these are studies from the last two weeks. I was just to lazy to upload them. And hopefully since I am starting back up my sketchbook I should be better about uploading my work.

Here's what I been working on for the last couple of days. I tried to break the figure down so I could understand what was going on better. But I had a lot of trouble with the legs especially since your like looking down on the pelvis. And the arms did not have that much mass to them so it was really hard to figure out where the muscles where. I also did some studies to help with breaking it down.

These are nice. You've definitely pushed the mileage on the drawings. Some of these, for example, the Asian building, I can see a lot of time must have been put in it. A note on the anatomy. At this stage I would steer away from the muscles and bones. In the process of learning you want to learn things which you can memorize, manage, and build upon one another. Until you get the proportions and big structural volumes of the figure totally nailed, I wouldn't go into studies of individual muscles and bones - these extra info cannot be fully absorbed, until you've nailed the big proportions, and the big structural shapes. We're all sure of the fact that Andrew Loomis knows his anatomy well. But he introduces figure drawing starting from gestures, and big volumes, and simplified lines and shapes - there's a reason.

Hiya. I have not been on here in a while. I trying to push myself harder and trying to make myself keep up with it. I always tend to lose motivation and stop. But I will do my best to put a end to this habit. These are some head and hands studies that I did today. I also did some sketches, I just need to scan them in. Anyways thanks for taking a look.
