@Midmar - I did a quick over paint of your entry to point out some things. I hope you don`t mind
#1 - post smaller images. Please. There are people with slower connections out there (myself included), and when you throw such a big image at them...well, it ain`t pretty.
#2 - proportions. I scaled her down ( all though maybe you wanted her to look super tall?) and increased the size of her head. I also repositioned/rotated some parts to get an overall feeling of symmetry. (head, lower body part)
#3 - color. Red an yellow are strong, so they are competing with each other. I suggest you tone one of them a bit down. Also, NEVER (and I mean NEVER) use black for shadows, b/c it makes them look muddy. Also, don`t use the same hue but different lightness when painting shadows and lights. There is always a hue shift in them. That`s the nature of color - it bounces EVERYWHERE, like a hyperactive kid on a sugar overdose. Also, pay attention to material definitions - smooth, polished surfaces (like metal) will reflect more color that surrounds them and transitions between light and dark will be sharper (tho, that depends on how polished the material really is).
Also, with red, yellow, black...white background was killing it. I suggest a soothing gray gradient to ease it on the eye.
#4 - design. I didn`t touch it b/c it`s your idea, and you probably have valid reasons why you went with this one. I personally see a Greek character here, but hey - that`s just me. Would make a great Antigone tho
And there is probably more, but I`m super sleepy ATM, so this should do for now. Also, take these advices with a grain of salt. I`m no master by a stretch of that word...
Ah, that's greatI just wanted to chime in to mention I wouldn't be able to finish due to an assignment for a possible job but things are looking brighter this way ^_^

so just dropping a sketch.
Blockin' the colors for my design.
Thanks for the extendi'm workin' on the character sheet for the final character design presentation.
Nice stuffs guys btw, what an inspiring theme. I think i have to thank you PatchworkWolf lol
Same ! I'm back and happy to see that new deadline
Here's my props ! I think to go with the third as Balianne ! So great works here as usual !
Thanks to the deadline extension I can now finish what I couldn't finish last weekend. Focussing on values as that seemed to be my biggest problem last time. Very cool concepts and topic this week!
a little update...i should bring alot more voodoo stuff in and start looking for some reference since i feel that the figure, pose, lighting and actually everything is just way off...
Wow, thanks a lot PxelSlayer! I'm new here, and to be honest I'm flattered you even spent 'x' amount of time to help my concept. Things like background luminosity are awesome tricks to help you achieve a better look. After seeing your overpaint this is my update, heavily influnced by you! Your skin tones for the face were so much better! looking back all I can see is a carrot.
What I took away from your tips as the most important was not choosing the highlight from the same hue. After some experimenting around the idea. I realized that you were right. It almost always looks better!
I agree the design is not as voodoo as it could be, but most of the images i have seen displayed for this character are some form of virgin mother and child, so that may explain the "byzantine' ish look.
Thanks again,
Midmar
Thanks to Pixeltuner for making me get my arse in gear

This is all for tonight, will do more tomorrow, but it's bedtime.
I wanna do something with the mouth, ATM she looks too passive, maybe a manic grin might work better...

Not quite done fiddling with colors, now that we have time. I like the idea of an old, religious icon style painting.
More updatiness.

I think I'm done, but if anyone can see anything wrong, don't hesitate to tell me.
Wow, thanks a lot PxelSlayer! Thanks for the tips and the overpainting. I am flattered that you would even spend 'x' amount on my work ( a complete stranger (an internet stranger! (brackets in brackets ))), I have never posted on here before and your help was most welcome!
Here is my update, directly inspired by alot of the help you gave me, the added luminosity from the background is something I hadn't really thought about before, I guess you were just adding a light source.
The thing I took away that was most helpfu was never taking a highlight from the same hue as the block in colour. After experimentation around with this I found you were right, with a bit of instinct you can find lighter colours to liven up the character rather than keep it dull.
As for the design, I found quite a few Virgin mother and child, 'renaissance' looking paintings and decided to base it off those, rather than some of the more vodoo images, that could be why you get a greeky feel from it. I would call it Byzantine.
Thanks again,
Midmar
@James Wintle:
nice job on keeping her accurate to the actual mythology, I could actually tell who it was.Right now her design looks cool, but maybe add some more doodads about her? like, especially the waist, like a sash/belt thingy, necklaces, or paints, etc.
also, composition wise I think parts of it are awesome, only beef is with that guy lunging on the left, it keeps pulling me out of the canvas or at least down to him. maybe flip him? or bring the composition up altogether? otherwise, definitely one of my favorites of this round![]()

Pixeltuner: Her proportions seem a bit.. mmm.. bizarre.. like her left hip and leg seem improbable and her hands a bit large and her shoulder too narrow. Are you going for that kinda stuff intentionally? If so, then I'd say push it some more so it looks like its done intentionally..
Hi ! First step of colors !
Still plugging away. @_@ Boop be doop doop.
Thanks for the comments! I think you're right in that I shouldn't have a figure facing away from the main subject like that. I've been messing around for a few hours now, trying different arrangements of figures with little success in really improving the composition. I might have to settle on leaving them out.
Drygrass I love your designLoving all the candles too - feels more like a shrine that way. Excellent!
Pixeltuner Looking VERY tribal and voodoo - love it! Also love her movement and posture. Looks excellent.
Ack, first time having a go at this!
My anatomy is really rough at the moment and everything keeps coming out a bit 'anime' or something.
I've gone for a 'voodoo genie/spirit' approach. Wanted to focus on pink and drapery round the head as well as a crown as they seem to be popular symbols of her. But going to re-do everything as it hasn't turned out how I wanted.
Still got a few ideas brewing though and I've got till Monday so going to experiments lots more and try to come up with something that really works.![]()
