Nice topic! Had a hard time working out a suitable composition. My first WIP!

The second one is darker and I think the ship's fear is far more visible - Just a quick sketch to see whether colours + composition are alright.

I'm gonna try to force myself to do this one too, the topic sounds great and It's been way too long since I did an illustration.
I'm going for a giant aquatic capture centipede robot thing. I've still gotta design its sections and the Leviathan itself, which I keep subconsciously trying to draw as perfect chaos from Sonic Adventure. But there's not really anything showing scale...maybe I should add some seabirds, or maybe a guy riding on the centipede's head.

If you create a dynamic perspective shot of the machine being high up in the sky or something and coming all the way down so it's close up that could be a good way of showing perspective. I really need to work on showing scale with mine too, thinking of making the guy and the boat smaller.

Forrest_I, try creating more focus on the leviathans face. Right now, the first thing my eyes go to is the lightning.

An update - I've decided to use the first WIP and give the leviathan a more crocodile-y look. The only problem I see is how I am going to make the dragon colourful, as I seem to have painted him in a rather black/grey arrangement, also I will have fire coming from the ship which will influence the lighting on the leviathan's face (particularly scales) - Anyone know of a way to do this?

Paint the fire and then use a mix between overlay and color layers to capture the color you want in the fire and in your leviathan. Also, if you want the fire to brighten up the leviathan then maybe you should make it around night time instead of the day, it'd make it much more dramatic and add more contrast.

Yep I will set the painting at dusk so I can use a little bit of the sun as well
Right and thanks for your advice! - One question, though, what's the difference between colour and overlay layers? (I know how they look but when do you use which?)

I'd say composition and such aren't a problem though, just the lighting. If you want to keep the lightning, try doing it only around the head, like a halo or something. Great way to draw attention to the focal.

Great stuff so far guys, keep it up. I've finally finished my coursework, so should may be entering from next week onwards. My last few months that I'm able to, since I'll turn 20 in July.

I wasn't liking the centibot anymore, I did a new comp sketch. It's supposed to be some wizards controlling some golems which are trying to contain the leviathan. Still needs work.

i was thinking that you could kill a leviathan like a whale or something but i figure these things should be waaaaay more aggressive.

leaning towards it being force-fed piranhas or divers with electrified cheese wire or something.

    okay probationary final

the easiest way to *catch* a leviathan is to bleed it out by spiking its food with trained piranhas which can nibble their way back out. i had a very nice and long and rambling backstory behind these leviathan thingies but the important thing is the piranhas.

also is a tinier pic without blood and so forth. classier but totally unfitting the leviathan extermination manual.

Hey guys another update! I'm just wondering how to make the water. I was thinking of making it sheets of ice, but realised that it's kinda flawed, as I doubt an old ship like that could trawl through ice. Any suggestions? (Would really like to avoid water cause i suck at it )

changed the face and its starting to come together now. As for the catching part the plan is bringing lev close to the shore and attacking there when its out of it's element

I think you need to give it something to compare to - the person in his spacebike (?) is close which is fine but i think you should add something closer to the monster, eg birds.
    Nice piece by the way!

Great stuff guys, looking forward to seeing what you're gonna do for the final pieces.

Aragah: As far as making something look far away, reduce the contrast on and around the creature, and make things in the foreground have higher contrast, use your darkest darks on the foreground, not in the creature shadow.
This is due to atmospheric perspective, which is basically that more atmosphere between viewer and subject makes the subject in the background more dull in a way.
I can't explain it easily, so that probably means I don't know it well enough. Someone else probably can though, if you read up on it and do some studies on how things behave when seen in the distance.

Having some fun with this, nice topic!
