    Game of thrones

I loved the tv series I just had to read the books and I have to say they're even better if that's possible! Currently reading a storm of swords pt 1 and I've come across some gorgeous Game of thrones artwork on here and on devientart but not nearly enough to quench my thirst haha.
So I was wondering if anyone else had come across any particularly beautiful illustrations inspired by the books because I just love seeing how other people envisage the characters/places I'd love to do my own versions some day but college leaves no time unfortunately... anyway yeah just curious if I'd missed any artwork because I know it's a really popular series with good reason hehe

I'm also a big fan of these books. There are several characters that I would like to draw but havn't gotten around to doing yet I'm nearing the end of Feast for Crows

Ooh thanks tobbA those are wonderful!

Sarc don't tell me what happens haha it's so tempting to flick forwards to see what's going to happen sometimes but I have to resist the urge!

Also found quite a lot on CGhub thanks Jason (:

    Hmmm.....

Some of those look like badly done revisions of
    Michael Komarck's calender stuff.

I'm in the middle of book 4 right now. I haven't seen much art, sadly the books themselves have super boring and badly crafted covers. I did see an anthology book called something like The Art of a Song of Ice and Fire, but the art in it was pretty awful.

Fantasy is a tough sell on me and I love Game of Thrones. I can see why some people hate it. Probably for the same reasons I like it.

Those images are tacky btw. He over rendered the details in alll the wrong places. He does not know how to use reference. He is a great example of how not to draw.

I really liked setting and casting in the series, characters are really well-played, except for some rare tacky bits,
but narrative wise it blows so much, end of season 1 is just a big piece of what
    won't bother with the books

Yeah I meant John Picacio. I keep seeing the ignorant lighting, random hiarchy of detail, misunderstanding of the human form, bullshit textures and elements that look like they are from other paintings. It looks like a collage of Boris Valejo fan art. I'm guessing the publisher wanted fake it from where Michael Komarck left off, so they hired a wannabe.

Michael Komarck's work is pretty good btw.

EDIT: I just looked at his site and he's usually not this bad. I think it's probably just horrible art direction.

Seems a bit silly to write-off the books based on the T.V. series. If you enjoy fantasy literature to any degree and have the patience to give a story time to stretch it's legs, I can almost guarantee you'll enjoy the books.

Edit: Sorry, to keep on topic: I'm sure I saw some Song of Ice and Fire artwork posted here on CA a few years ago. I recall an image depicting the scene where Theon Greyjoy searches for Bran and Rickon Stark, wading into a river. I'll see if I can find it...

I had never heard of the Books until the TV series premiered. The first one was slow going and difficult to get into, but after that the series took off. I really enjoyed the show, and have watched them all again looking for small things I missed the first time. I'm not a big reader, but this show makes me want to read the books. I'm so looking forward to the next season.

It's the first in a eight part series. The first book is just setting up the conflicts that will play out over the rest of the series. It's not supposed to resolve anything.

I don't mean the books are bad or whatsoever, I simply don't have time to read 8 books of something I'm not really excited about.

I can see why some people wouldn't be into it so much haha I'm a massive geek when it comes to books like Eragon, abarat etc but totally not bothered I think the series are really well written although possibly confusing/lots going on in some places but very absorbing once you're into it. Favourite character has to be Daenerys and I think the tv show is so so accurate compared to other books to tv adaptations (like the southern vampire mysteries )

Have to agree Komarck's are better (Thanks Misplacedhippos (: ) but John Picacio's are still ahella of a lot better than my attempts would be so I'm not complaining.

These are inspired by the tv series more than the books. But they're done from one of my favorite artists, Phil Noto, and I thought they were worth putting here if you haven't seem 'em yet. They're all from his tumblr

Yeah...this I think. John's a good designer with a modern style but these seem caught between what he would do with them and what others wanted or expected.
    Good observation.

i watched the whole series the other day to see what the fuss was about, i thought it was pretty good, loads of tits, Hollyoaks' Roxy McKee, nice production, super nasty characters. not too much corn. i expected more monsters though, most of it was just courtly politics that could just as well be set in England or Spain... i like characters behaving seriously in rdiculous fantasy situations though, and hopefully more people will get flamed alive next series.

    Don't worry 'bout that.

That said though. The thing about the books is that they steer away from the usual sword and sorcery formula and focus more on the courtly politics. Which I personally think is a nice change of pace compared to your average fantasy adventure.

The fantastical elements generally get stronger as the series progresses, though the series is always first and foremost about politics.

I had to agree this stuff is uninteresting on so many levels. Too bad the powers that be are pushing photo manip over illustration so much. It really is a low point for the illustration industry in general. The blame sits with the publishers not the illustrators. The lllustrators will do things the way the people who are paying want them done.
