Hello! This is just my sketchbook! (I tried making one a week or so ago but I think I messed it up so I'm trying again.) I know I have a lot of flaws and I have seen you have an extensive collection of tutorials. I hope maybe I can look back on these first posts some day and be amused by them.

took you long enough mate! Not a bad start! The 3rd guy reminds me of the dancing guy in zelda. The left eye of the girl on the painting is a little wonky, a bit too high i think. If you arent already I would do some face studies and practice them a bit more. I you dont have the loomis books, they are a must have and they are free =D (for some reason my google isnt working but just search loomis books and u will be fine.)

Good job with the studies, they're some great ways to understand real life. However, try applying some of that knowledge to. Do some stuff from imagination after you've done a study. Think "i'm going to try and improve on something today. So i'll do a study to learn more and then draw from my imagination to test my knowledge"

The coke seems off. I'd bet that yellow color would bounce more and there would be a more prominent shadow from the can. Try working on b/w. The colors look nice in the orange though

I'd definitely suggest checking out http://www.ctrlpaint.com/ While he does not use artrage, nearly all things fundamental in art is universal.

Thank you very much, I will try to apply my studies to things after completing them. Good spot on the yellow surface with the soda can. I plan on doing another one of the can since I don't like it as much as the orange.

Today I looked at faces. The first two are attempts without reference, then I tried to figure out the pieces of the skull and then I did another without ref. Should I be using reference more? I kind of feel like that's just cheating. Like I'm just copying what I see and bypassing any effort to understand the structure.

well you are learning so you should be using ref and still studying proportions and basic stuff. Remember simple still lifes before more complex, a soda can might be a little above your head right now. Try more fruit till you get a good grasp on how to process information. Well you are JUST copying if you don't try and understand what is happening, the whole point of ref is to aid you so you can understand and adapt to the problems.

Today I tried more using Ref.

It took me too long to understand the importance of using reference and depended solely on unconscious mental notes..It is not cheating, you will gain a lot of insight from doing it.
especially if your doing a lot of details there is no way you know exactly what every thing looks like in detail so you look for reference to fill these holes. I guess the more you know the less you need it!

Here's an update I guess, I really should have done this like over 2 months ago but WHATEVER MAN REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE. A mixture of 30 and 60 second sketches done from randomly alternating reference photos as well as the faces which are just me trying to not be shit at faces.

I like your hand sketches

Thank you both, while I was at first fairly unimpressed by the concept I really do love the idea of a sketchbook now. Looking at the first sketches I put down in my palm book and the work I'm doing now I can see a very slow improvement, and that drives me to work even harder. In regards to the working out of the big bits before the small I believe that is probably one of my biggest weaknesses I need to tackle, and I hope my painting will serve to better me in that regard. Another big thing is that when I don't use reference a lot of the time my work becomes quickly juvenile and improper. I really cannot do good realistic work attempts from my mind.

Oh well, someday.

This is a very common thing. You have to remember that to draw something well, you need to convey on the page everything that makes it what it is. Everything that defines it and makes it unique. this is not something you can expect to memorize immediately. What reference does is allow you to see more of these defining aspects that normally, you might forget all about.

When skilled artists draw from imagination they don't always know exactly what the thing they are drawing looks like, but they have an incredibly strong foundation of knowledge on how hundreds of similar things look and behave. The trick isn't only to draw from reference, but to study the reference as you draw (it's why they call them "studies")
