Some anatomy studies!
I had problems doing this...I got issues with anatomy, though I did my best!

I have some problems with anatomy and a friend of mine told that I´m still have some issues with fundamentals. So here we go again, starting with basics!
More heads studies, based on Loomis´book.

When drawing faces, keep in mind that they are very full most of the time. You've got some really sharp angles going on with the cheek bones generally, and though it's fine to draw prominent cheekbones, the cheek underneath it usually isn't as hollow as your drawing it. That vertical line under the cheek bone you've been drawing doesn't quite happen like that. Think about the planes of the face when drawing those sorts of landmark lines. When they seem to 'dig too deep' into the face it looks really hollow and makes the face look extremely old.

It might be helpful for you to 'reference' the face of a real person, like and actress or actor, when doing the Loomis heads. It's something I did in class and was pretty helpful. You just get one photo of the person, and draw their face from different angles based on the photo. It's pretty challenging and can teach you a lot.

As far as the basics go, I agree that you're still having trouble with relationships between shapes. In the faces you've been doing, sometimes you hit the mark pretty dead on, and others you falter. It looks like you have more trouble with the up and down shots, which are hardest to learn after all. It might help if you think of the head as 3D. You're forgetting to draw the space under the chin, which flattens out your heads, and your necks don't flow into the right direction. Really keep an eye out for those things.



To help understand relationships between objects and planar forms better, I'd suggest setting up some still lives where you have many objects overlapping. In the still life, approach it like drawing a planar face cast, where there are definitive plane changes. To really get proportion down, you've got to understand how shapes relate. Though it seems like a tedious and boring exercise, if you really sit down and take it seriously you could really improve your 'eye' for proportions between objects. It's best to do the still lives from life since it's more of a challenge and you learn more.



But you've really improved a lot. c: I enjoy visiting your sketchbook since I can see the improvement in your work. You're coming along great! Keep it up!

I´ve been studying Loomis since last week and I´m following the book! My next step are the planes, then I hope to put in practice the tips you gave me!

Now my focus is strictly anatomy, however sometimes I study shapes and value. I´ll work hard to master human anatomy, since this is my biggest difficult to learn!

For anatomy I´m studying Loomis and Bridgman´s book, following Marshall Vandruff´s class and tips.

Hello, I noticed that you study from Loomis' book and I have an advice for you that many ppl that start to draw have problems with.

So, when redrawing from a book or photo, try to focus on what you see and draw it as you see it, don't draw what you think you see, don't use your brain/imagination to help you because they won't, don't draw a face, don't draw a nose, draw exactly the lines you see on the photo/drawing. To help with this you can try drawing things upside down, or negatives - you only draw the space that isn't filled by the object you're drawing, nothing inside it.

Thanks for the tip ANty93. You're not the first person who tell me that. I got a big problem to learn anatomy.
First I tried learn from Bridgman's book and I realized that I couldn't put together shapes and muscles.
Now I'm trying Loomis' book and see what happens.
Another thing: before I was trying to draw shapes, then join the muscles without understand the shapes. I was trying to draw human body on my own without reference. Now I'm copying everything, so maybe I'm still have the problem of "drawing what I think to see".
I'll work on it!

Nice pencil work. You've got a good eye, and you've made an excellent start. I don't have anything to add that hasn't already been said. Just keep studying the craft, doing studies of real life stuff, and pushing work out. And don't lose hope because you aren't where you would like to be or because someone is overly critical, because everyone starts from the exact same point. Getting better is all about dedication and hard work, and with both of those, you will definitely improve. I can already see that you have a good eye for form and value, and I think you will make significant progress in the next few months if you keep it up. Keep posting mate, and the best of luck!

It's good to hear that, because sometime many criticisms could have a negative influence on you. And I'm really glad of my improvement, especially I've been drawing for 1 year and 8 months!
