I love your painterly technique. It works very well. As a viewer I can't help staring at all the shapes and textures that make up what is the overall piece, it's sort of like a visual feast of an already made jigsaw puzzle!

Your study of colour theory really pays off. Do you find that you use references for understanding how your colour needs to look when your drawing something from your imagination?

Thanks for posting your works, they're really exquisite.

It depends on the subject, but yes I find reference when needed. It's usually for some anatomy or texture detail though, not so much for color.

The is a concept of a sci-fantasy creature that floats in a planet's atmosphere; commonly referred to as "Sky Puffs".

Filled with a gas lighter than air, they are carried around by the wind. While they do have wings, they are only good for stability, not propulsion.

    ...
This is the very beginning of visual development for a personal sci-fantasy story. Much more to come

I'm really beginning to doubt the longevity of CA.org. I love this site, but it seems to be cursed with frequent downtime. I miss the good old days...
    ...

As briefly mentioned in a previous post, I have just started work on a personal project, a sci-fi story, which will eventually take the form of a graphic novel. The main purpose of this project is to beef up my portfolio with all sorts of concept art and illustration. If the end product ever materializes, that will simply be a bonus.

I've been studying the art of story telling/structure lately with quite a lot of enjoyment. It has me feeling much more inspired to create art, with the goal of bringing the stories I see in my head to life.

Really great palette on your paintings!!

For the last study, is there an adjustment/filer that creates the red/cyan lines or is it just painted in?

    Thanks,

Yes I was experimenting with "chromatic aberration" for the first time. It may be a bit gimmicky, but it seemed a bit more interesting then just plain gray scale.

Basically you duplicate the layer, go into the Blending Options, set one layer with Green & Blue off and one layer with Red off, then you offset the layers slightly.

Hello Lane! Do you have any good tips on learning life-drawing? I just started going to 2.5hr sessions on wednesdays and find them extremely challenging. Maybe also some of your favourite resources would be cool to know as well. I love your work and it reminds me alot like Jaime Jones.

I highly value life-drawing sessions. Sadly, my group only meets once every month, so I feel "rusty" every time I draw the figure. It is going to be very challenging if you are trying to capture every detail within the short time period. Try instead to focus on a simple objective. If you are going to draw the entire body, establish the line of action and build off of it. Focus on capturing the model's gesture. Any details that don't contribute to that goal can be left out.

Sometimes I choose to study just a small portion of the body.. head, hands, feet, ears, nose, etc. Life drawing for me isn't about creating a finished work of art, but studying anatomy and gesture so that I can draw better from imagination later.

There's a good episode of Drawn Today podcast on the subject: http://www.drawntoday.com/podcasts/DT_podcast_ep012.mp3
    I HIGHLY recommend Henry Yan's book: http://www.amazon.com/Henry-Yans-Fig.../dp/1427610231 preview: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i-hKxBOkcMQ

I have collected a long list of various art resources on my blog here: http://lanebrownart.blogspot.com/p/resources.html

Figure drawing is almost like an athletic sport. It requires the effort of your whole body in cooperation with your brain, and frequent practice.
I still have much to improve on. Hopefully I can get more frequent drawing sessions sometime in the future.
