What is this paper and brand in Greg Manchess's demo?

What is the paper that Gregory Manchess used for his oil painting "Above the Timberline"?

    www.youtube.com/watch?v=8OVU7tKxki8

I normally use canvases, but they take up too much space. I have some oil painting paper, student grade (very bad), but they are not as smooth looking as Manchess's. Manchess's also comes in single sheets, I think. I think it is bristol, and if so, what is the brand?

Also why does he have duct tape on the paper's borders?

Looks like a heavy duty watercolor paper. Maybe Arches 300 lb?

Does he not say what he's using in the whole demo?

I have the whole video, and I only saw part one, and he did not say the paper, if I recall correctly. It is hard scrolling through an hour video looking for a phrase.

Greg often paints on unstretched pre-gessoed canvases. then he can just roll them up or pile them up or whathever and they don't take much space.

I had the same question when I bought the demo (part 1 only) which was answered in another thread:

    MANCHESS GREG MATERIALS LIST

I work on pre-primed (acrylic, not oil primed) linen, Fredrix brand at this point. It's durable, flexible, with mild tooth. In comes in various lengths and you can cut it to any size you need. C'mon, it's the 21st century....why stretch canvas to prime? It's also convenient to roll up when it's dry, for shipping purposes. Yes, you can roll up paintings. (Took years to believe it, but true. Many museums roll and store their art.) Always remember to roll paintings image side out.

I use Galkyd & Gamsol for working with the paint. Took me a little time to get used to it since it has different properties than linseed oil & turpentine (nasty).

And next time, I think I will show more of the sketch process.

    Thanks for the support everyone!

Hey All....I thought sure I mentioned the canvas I was working on in the video. Sorry if it's not there. It may have gotten edited out, not on purpose, but just as they were cutting the shot together.

People are not used to seeing canvas or linen off the stretchers, so they assume it must be paper of some sort. I've been explaining this for 30 years. There are tons of canvas and linen available out there that's already primed and on rolls. Try it sometime. Really convenient!

I use Fredrix brand, Antwerp Belgium Linen, #1044....I think it's 140DP....the 'dp' stands for double-primed. They used to make it much smoother, but the tooth is nice and subtle.

I lay paintings in a drawer...you can get hundreds of pieces in a flat file. Stretchers are unnecessary.

Hope this helps. You can also catch me commenting and putting up posts on muddycolors.blogspot.com
