    layer changing with step backward

Does anybody know how to disable this objectionable feature when PS changes selected layer after pressing "Step Backward"? I select new layer, do something wrong, then cancel, and then PS selects previous layer, not that layer I selected.

You have to erase that snapshot of the history that goes back to the other layer. Or you could do what I do sometimes and that is make some light marks somewhere and then start painting so if you undo you'll go to those light marks but stay on the right layer.

That is the most annoying thing ever. I hate it, but I don't think there is a solution to it. I think it is part of the way the program works.

That and accidentally color picking that gray background color annoy me to no end. I usually do what Ross said, lightly paint a couple color strokes to ensure I stay on the right layer.

Well I used this method to prevent layer changing previously but just now I found that you don't need actually to do a stroke directly on the canvas. you can just touch outside of canvas and it works in the same way but without excess garbage on a layer. also, when you'll move this layer to find that strokes there will be no any garbage out of the canvas border.

When I run into this problem I grab the newly selected layer that I want and drag the layer order down and then back up again.

i fucking hate it to. once a new layer is selected, draw a line or a dot or whatever out side of the canvas. or draw a dot and simply delete it again.
