    poses wednesday

ya I definitely made a conscious effort to show the flattened butt, thats probably why it looks so cut off. Here's mine from today... the girl in the bunny suit on the right was an experiment , it started as a silhouette that I painted on top of instead of doing the line sketch. Turned out okay, but it was difficult to do the colouring on the shirt with hard brush.

hey dude those are looking good.

just a personal opinion feel free to disregard, but i think you should not use gaussian blur, i get the feeling that either using the soft brush or the blur is a way of trying to make it look better, as a way of masking the mistakes in value. Even with a hard brush if the values are in the right place it will look excellent. (like the one on the right) still looking good tho!

cheers sean, looking at the pictures there are specific things that im trying to discover.

1st pic (the cake thing): The top of the shadow is it a straight line or curved? im not sure how to translate it?

2nd pic (the post): The top of the cast shadow of the post. why is it slanted diagonally and not straight?

3rd pic (the open box): I think the shadow underneath the box is wrong but not sure why. Is there a shadow inside the box on the left. im not sure.

    Cheers!

    Thanks for the compliment.
The greek guy in a toga is a study based on a sculpture I found on the web, and the egyptian girl is a nude study that got out of hand and ended up as a standalone piece. The horse is also based on a photo but the rider is not.
All of the others were done without using any references at all.

Yes, I'm interested in color and as I said in the post I am sort of starting from scratch. One of the things I want to do is move away a bit from the standard things I'm drawing, to sort of expand the themes more. I always kind of fall back into the theme and setting I'm familiar with, and that's not really good for going forward.

Since I lack any kind of formal training whatsoever, and all my work is based on intuitive smudging about until something good pops out - I really wouldn't know what would be the best place to start "training" so to speak hah. I am open for anything that you think would be a good place to start

Ok, here it is a plastic bottle (not transparent or something like that, just matte orange) and now I look at it it feels like flat and maybe the bottle is not perfect, but I want some guide to make incoming life drawings better

I made an exercise for that on post 98 page 4 if you would just do the studies like a normal study Just don't use color picker and forget the seven steps all together. 10 studies each of value key...this helps you understand values better. so 30 min to an hour per sound good?
Yeah I'll watch that right now and make that studies or maybe tomorrow idk, beign part of a group or just having a kind of mentor get me really motivated to work and just keep working, so thanks for that

hi sean thanks for the compliments! just a few questions,

when u say zoomed out do you mean on the ref pic or the piece? Im always zoomed out on the reference, and have been for most of the piece (apart from the eye hehe and the beard really, actually the nose as well)

Can you explain a little bit about how you use layers, i know the basics, but i was told somewhere to do it all on one layer.

The orc skin came out great!

Egg0: I think youve forgotten about the light source! if its coming diagonally in it means where the shadow is will be darker than the light side. check that ball thing its really useful.

Sorry I don't like to, like, intrude (idk if that's the word), but maybe you can watch Ctrlpaint.com tutorials about painting in layers, I think that actually is a pretty good way, and if you watched it before, to see again how it is cause it's always helpful.

    (sorry about my english)

And Sean I didn't get the exercise well, I have to take an image and guess with the value key? or how?

Sorry but I didn't get the last part :/ English is not my first lenguage and I have some issues with the slang I guess, basically I didn't get the part of in a nutshell

Otherwise I push a little forward values on the bottle image

Oh thanks man! Really aprecciate the translation, anyways I can understand basic english well, I mean I understood everything you put there, just nutshell here means nothing more than shell of the nut, I think that the expresion "in nutshell" in english is kind of keep it simple. So I'll work on that!

And, if you wanna and you have some kind of messenger or something more fluid to talk just tell me

hi ok so i think it was a FZ tutorial where he said try painting in one layer until you are good nuff, its definetly been a good learning experience, but ive been meaning to goto ctrl paint and look at the layers thing looks good!

this study has really helped me to look at diff values its much appreciated!

So how much should i stay zoomed out (25%?)

anyways i know this isnt related but i thought i might post this here for some critique as i think its awesome.
