"Artist's Guide to Sketching"

Just sharing my pleasure at finding a copy of Gurney and Kinkade's "Artist's Guide to Sketching" in my local library.

I remember seeing this book several years ago. It's odd, but the tips for capturing motion seem more useful now that I've tried to do it on my own. Funny how that happens!

Was it written by THAT Gurney? And THAT Kinkade? Didn't know they ever worked together.

They worked together as the background painters for Fire and Ice back when they were both starting out:

Yeah, it's an interesting fact. The forum vehemently loves Gurney and vehemently hates Kinkade, and as luck would have it, they were coworkers back in the day.

Yeah, I was shocked when I saw the book's authors. There's at least one image of them drawing together outdoors. (For those who have a copy of the book, it's on page 36.)

Not only co-workers, but college roommates.

Gurney had a set of recent(ish) blogposts talking about the Fire & Ice movie. Apparently Kinkade got them both in, and Gurney didn't have much painting experience before hand, just a lot of drawing experience. So it was very much a "learn on the job" experience for him.

I think one of the most interesting facts out those posts was the fact that Kinkade liked to paint native americans, cowboys, and grisly scenes. There's a part of me that's really interested in seeing that, just because it's such a contrast from his current stuff.

Kincade was/ and or is, a very good painter.

His subject matter and ethics are more the issue.

edit: and OK, some of those color choices hurt my eyes, but thats part of his marketing.

I have always thought he's a much worse painter than his supporters claim, and a much better one than his detractors claim. :-)

Good observation blogmatix. I've seen a few of his plein airs...pretty decent. To be honest I've always kind of pitied him a bit...then again, he has a pretty healthy ego. Mainly though because I think he knows what a sham it all is and that he has absolutely no respect from his colleagues or peers. That seems pretty tragic to me. As I recall it was his brother that was the marketing genius/guru behind the empire.
