Hey Frenik, thanks for stopping by The basic object shading studies are perfect and very inspiring to do them too. I have access to Scott Robertson lectures about planar shading, so I will give that rewatch very soon thanks to you and also that shadow theory page is very useful. Nice to see higher level of these fundamental studies Oh and how do you train your linework? It rocks!

I like all of the constructions that you've been doing! Very nice. I strongly recommend doing still lifes as well though so that you can practice seeing values from a different perspective as well. more of an intuitive way. I think that the reflected light on a lot of the shape constructions are a bit too bright. I also really like those gas masks.. I think the bottom left is my fav, but the bottom two seem not to read as a "gasmask" that well.. but I think once you add in some value to distinguish the piping from the rest maybe that will help?

Those light-dark studies on those shapes are more than interesting and (why not) educational on how light works! keep up!!!

Thanks for the comments, guys, I really appreciate everything. I've considered starting a new thread titled "Perspective Puzzles", where we all post ideas for perspective challenges (constructions/renderings and the like) and see who can complete them. We all need practice with this stuff, so I figured it'd be fun to make games and competitions out of it. I dunno; let me know what you think.

More constructions and a rendering of a more complex construction. Super fun stuff. Now to work on some IDW.

P.S. I woke up today with James Gurney's "Color and Light" delivered at my door, so I'll be reading that to soak up whatever goodies it has to offer. I'll let you all know what I think.

Woooo!!! Dude on top of the perspective thread (which im done for) We should do some separate studies together to help push each other since we are hard workers at this concept art training. Maybe like I give assignments for the week then you give for the next to help push each other to get better. Im sure alot of people have done this before but it would be cool to try But yea great updates man and let me know about the perspective thread thing, i wanna be a part of it

Hey Thanks for stopping by. You're making some serious progress in here! Some quick things I'd say about designing guns.. make sure you have a definite focal point and focus your details around that. Also, guns are like most things - they should have a clear archetype e.g. shotgun, pistol, assault rifle, flamethrower etc. etc. I find it's useful to sketch out a lot of real guns, or at least look at them with that in mind and think about what makes something read instantly as a shotgun etc. Hope that helps, keep up the good work!

WIP for Gasman's suit, for this week's IDW. Listened to Killswitch Engage station on Pandora all night. Everytime Five Finger Death Punch comes on I want to kill someone. Hate that band so much. Anyway, gimme crits/comments/"go to hell, FFDP is my favorite band" or whatever you see fit.

    Hey!

Great work man!!!! I want to start of frist by saying that your pose and proportions are right on man, you are becoming realy pro and its great to see. I also did a quick paint over type thing with some suggestions of my own. But remeber, these are just some ideas i had, i personally think your concept is perfection hahahahaha Worthy of any concept art for a game or movie. I just had some thoughts that could give it some dramma and interesting design aspects, but im no pro myself yet hahahah

Thanks a lot, Joe! Looking back on it after a few hours I can definitely see that there are some perspective/proportion things that need to be addressed, so I'll work on that tonight for sure. I'll also start that perspective thread tonight, although I don't have any ideas yet on what to put in there.

Not too sure about what to do, cause usually people want to learn how to do certain challenges before they can do them. Maybe if we have a tutorial with each challenge lol i imagine draiwing easy side, front, top views would be a good challenege for people I think as long as we tackle it it will inspire others!

Overall I think this IDW entry turned out well. I do think repeating some of the tubing design (at least the feel of it) on the lower half of his body would unify the design better. Also, the coloring could be pushed further and then red could have been repeated elsewhere, also to help unify the design. It being only by his neck brings too much attention to itself. The gun has a pretty cool shape to it but some more studies of weaponry and other mechanical studies would be really beneficial. It's looking a bit bland now and doesn't feel like a real weapon. Feels more like a toy. The remedy for this, like I mentioned before, is just doing more studies from real world design. It only feeds your imagination even more!

Big fan of the mask you made. Looks really cool and feels insect-like. Something about that just feels right for the subject matter.

Anyways, good work. Let's see more!

Some weird robed guy doodle and another cube study, but I'm adding color to these now. I really want to make that "leap" from value to color (not to say that I understand values at all, but I really want to at least have a grasp at how color works). I think it turned out okay, but I'll let you guys judge that.

you are getting better and better all of the time!
the line drawing on the last IDW is really solid, but it seems to read to me as being quite flat. (his right arm, down his the right side)
I love how you are now perspective sketching with so much more confidence than before. it is awesssome!

GrayPersona - Thanks for the link, man. That really helped out with understanding the relationship between values and colors more.

Vesh - always a pleasure to have you drop by, sir

Worked some more with color tonight. If anyone sees anything I'm doing horribly wrong, don't hesitate to stop and correct me.

What colours are the ball, the table and the light meant to be? Is the ball supposed to be metallic, pearly or glossy? How far away is the main light supposed to be? What you are doing wrong depends on what exactly you are trying to do.

Thank you, sirs. Briggsy, the ball was a rather saturated green and matte surfaced, the light source is supposed to be the sun (almost noon) and the table is supposed to be the ground. I followed basic guidelines as I went, such as upward facing shadows reflecting the blue of the sky, downward shadows are warmer as they get the reflected sun, so I was trying to play up the contrast between warms and cools. I'm just a little lost, so guidance is welcomed, especially from someone who knows colors like you do (I love your site; very informational if just a little confusing, ha).

That's cool man, hey i was thinking of doing a tutorial section in the mentoring or tutorial section of the forums with a collection of tutorials i made. But each one i make i also want to contribute it to your thread. Would that be cool? I also keep including a link to the puzzle thread over there as well.
