    Loomis books reprint

Not sure if this is useful to anyone but I received my Loomis reprints in the mail yesterday and decided to take some pictures of the books so you know what they look like. Ordered them through Amazon and was pretty clueless as to how the quality etc would be but I'm amazed, they are fantastic! So here they are, if you were still in doubt; no longer!

Put in my mechanical pencil for size comparison.

I still can't believe they're reprinting them. And hey, check it out: Successful Drawing is coming out in May!

I'm glad to see Loomis's books back in print. Are there any differences from the PDF versions that get passed around?

Edit: From looking at the Amazon reviews, these appear to be a word-for-word reproduction of the originals, printed slightly larger than A4 paper.

The big thing is size. They're nice, large, hard cover books. They seem to be decent quality though I haven't had mine long enough to start falling apart. The pictures are big and clear. I think I have most of his books on .pdf but the reprints are worth it. I don't think a computer or e-reader do the books justice.

Hell yes. I've wanted a hard copy of Succesful Drawing since forever.

It's so much better to flick through something in your hands instead of scrolling through PDFs that include pages of differing scan sizes.

Damn, those are the only ones I can find on Amazon Germany. Hope we can soon get the others there too!

But this rocks. Finally there's a printed Loomis! I'm not a fan of the digital pdfs... studying a book seems easier if it's printed and you can take it anywhere with you... and I have a longer attention span reading physical books.

I thought these had been in print for ages? I've had figure drawing for a few months now, unless they've only just been reprinted in America? Not sure as I'm in the UK =/.

If Successful Drawing is coming out in May I suspect Creative Illustration will be out before the end of next year. Wonder if they'll do Eye of the Painter as well.

Haha great stuff. Didn't realise they finally got legal permission to do the reprints.

I would buy these in a flash but I already have anatomy down to a fine point lol. Maybe i'll just get them for decoration.

If you're ordering FDFAIW from Amazon and hoping to get it for Christmas you might be disappointed. It was two months before mine even shipped. Worth the wait though, I was also super impressed by the quality. I was worried the pages would be grainy or have noise on the edges but they're all sharp and clean.

I learned more from the pdfs than from any book I've had but I can study so much better with a physical copy and I'm going through it all over again, reworking my fundamentals.

I think I found an anatomy error on page 60, can someone check me? Center diagram of the shoulder with five numbered muscles. Looks like they mixed up the numbering on the Pectoralis Major and the Latissimus Dorsi. Am I looking at it wrong or aren't they reversed?

I wonder if this is regional; I live on the West Coast and was hesitant to order from Amazon when the product page said "ships within 2-4 weeks" or something of that nature, but I ordered anyway and it was in my hands within early the next week. As of right now, FDFAiW is definitely in stock. No delay messages anymore.

Also, if you check the back flap of the dust jacket, Titan plans to release almost every other publication... except The Eye of the Painter. I wonder why that is.

I spotted this as well, I was confused lol. I can't tell you for certain but I believe it's wrong. The full figure next to the list labels the pectoralis major but the zoomed in drawing says the same muscle is the lattisimus dorsi.

Yeah, its wrong. I have a copy from 44 (it was first published in 43) and the error is there too. Wow, an almost 70 year typo, that has to be some kind of record. It was continuously in print from 43 to the late 70's.

Hey guys and gals - just wanted people to know that the reprint of Creative Illustration by Andrew Loomis is available at the Book Depository.

    http://www.bookdepository.com/Creati.../9781845769284

I pre ordererd it a few months ago expecting it later in the year, and it seems it's turned up early.
I've double checked Amazon before posting and can't find a similar listing, so if you have always wanted to get a physical copy of this, bloody go for it!

Here's a pic to show you what a beast it is.

    Successful Drawing

Does anyone have a copy of the new Successful Drawing reprint from Titan books? Do you know if it is reprinted from the original Successful Drawing or from the revised version called 3 Dimensional Drawing? The original revised version has 16 more pages of technical tips called Putting Perspective to Use and I'm wondering if Titan was aware of the revisions and change of title.

I have a reprint, but I don't see any sections with that name. The reprint has 160 pages and a 1951 copyright (as well as 2012).

I have original copies of both volumes. That's too bad because the revised edition was printed in 1958 and replaces the gallery with useful technical information for putting perspective to work in your pictures with examples.

In the intro to the book Loomis says:

Most of the material in this book was first published in 1951 under the title Successful Drawing. In this edition, sixteen pages of new technical material on the all-important subject of perspective have been substituted for a purely pictorial section called 'A gallery of Drawings' and certain other changes and corrections have been made. The title Three Dimensional Drawing was given to the revision as representing much more accurately than the former title, the real scope of the work.
The purpose of all these changes is to make the book more valuable to practicing artists; I can only hope that it has been successfully accomplished.

    Andrew Loomis 1957

Maybe we should let Titan know so they can publish it the way he wanted it to be. I doubt it is worth publishing both volumes for sixteen pages. I'm sure they are doing print on demand so it shouldn't be that big of a deal.
Maybe they could extend the new version leaving in the gallery and adding the other replacement chapter and bump the page count to 176.
