    Jarrad's Sketchbook

Hi everyone! I started drawing 1 year and 3 months ago and I am very eager to get to the point where I can make a living as a concept artist. My goal is to be at that point within 3 years from now. I am open to all kinds of feedback!

I am currently spending all of my drawing time creating shapes and focusing on perspective. My goal is to one day create places, creatures, structures from my imagination!

Here are some more drawings to start off this sketchbook!

the last drawing of this batch of four was my first environment sketch.
It was a lot of fun although there are some serious issues with it!

    Welcome to the dark side.

You've got a great start, playing with shapes in perspective, and that environment looks very interesting.

    Keep at it! ^_^

Thanks guys! Here is a little thing I just did that was inspired by an ant. It's so hard to control that pen! I'm going to check out both of your sketchbooks now!

Here is a very quick beetle drawing I did before going to bed now! the mistakes are smacking me in the face.. I have been drawing though.. just not posting because what I am drawing lately isn't the most exciting stuff.. boxes, grids, perspective stuff..

    failed attempt

This is my failed attempt at some sort of floating form.. perhaps with some refinement it could of become a spaceship.

Awesome stuff so far! I love the perspective work and it makes me realize just how much more work I have to do with my own.

Thanks! I always feel my perspective work is brutal.. That is the interesting thing about perspective.. You have either done it correctly, or you haven't! no grey area if you want to get technical.. which I don't reaaally want to for pieces.. but in practice I like to.

After that poor car sketch I tried to redeem myself with this hovercraft sketch. I may add value to it with pen after but I didn't want to ruin it just yet! It doesn't really make sense. I don't think that it would actually be able to fly with no wings and one sideways rotor. hah!

    Sup Jarrad! Nice sketches!
I particularly like the way you handle your contours, being an art n00b myself i can only offer an opinion but I do get a nice sense of form, they feel much more 3-D to me. I feel like your perspective is a strong point! Maybe you could play around with it, i dunno just a suggestion

haha and don't worry about your designs making sense atm if you haven't been drawing/designing for long, as long as people understand their function that's a good start

Thanks Squid-G! Perspective is probably my strong point because for the last couple of months I've almost exclusively been working just on it, but I feel like I have such a long way to go just to develop a strong perspective sense. Part of me feels like I should work on other things simultaneously so that I don't become too one sided! I will definitely try to do something more involved with perspective and post it up here.

    back to anatomy!

I thought that perhaps I've been a bit too one sided with perspective, so I've decided to work on anatomy as well! Here are some of the better heads done in practice.. (sigh).. I am using the one of the methods demonstrated on Ron Lemen's DVD.

here is another floating form that I attempted to render... I screwed up the perspective on the cast shadow so badly and I somehow didn't notice until after rendering it.. oops! Perhaps this will teach me to be more aware!

    Keep it up.

I like that you're working hard at perspective, I'm sure the studies will pay off big time in the future... now if only I had some patience to work on it..

here are two sketches that I didn't do much planning for. I just doodled around and it was fun! I only threw down a couple of guidelines.. As a result, that thing's cast shadow is off, and it looks like a lame floating shoe! I kind of like the other shape though. not all was lost!

Hi again, Jarrad. I think it's really starting to show that you enjoy drawing vehicles and scenes, man. Personally I think that's an awesome way to keep your mind set on concept art, especially if you can get super good at making cool looking designs in great perspective like you are. I would love see more and more designs in the future!

ok one more cylinder before bed.. I know I don't draw the most interesting things, but i feel very compelled to get the basics down solid before focusing a lot of attention on other things.

good afternoon everyone! Here are some warm ups for today. The inking process always makes me nervous because i don't want to fumble and make shaky lines.. which results in shaky lines.. excuses excuses..

Thank you so much peter. That really means a lot coming from you.

ok.. here is a drawing I just finished and it turned out mostly in disaster. I took that warm up shape idea where I didn't really draw guide lines or any of that and just used the other lines as reference points to keep the perspective true, but I did this on a larger scale. I definitely lost it somewhere along the way because the perspective convergence gets really screwy. I also decided to go over it in pencil rather then pen (didn't want to make it worse). But after going over it in pencil I thought it looked worse so I went over it with pen which at that point was like beating a dead horse. Here is my disaster-piece!

I tried to save the previous drawing by sloppily throwing some values on it. I know that the light is coming from the left and there should be shadows on the ground and the other objects but i don't really like casting all of those shadows right now.. so many shadows!!!!!

Don't feel so discouraged, man. The point of studying these things is just that - study! So when something starts to go wrongly, don't sweat it. You'll always be better off because working through that frustration leads to more learning and different ways of figuring out the problems you run across. Keep up the posts, sir.
