Talking Conceptual Stage for 2D Game Design

Hi guys. After lurking for some time, I have decided to post a thread. Weeeee!

The main thing I need support with... and if this is the wrong place or you have any suggestions concerning this post, please let me know.

Where do you even start with conceptualizing a 2D game? What does this look like? I want to create the most relevant and helpful sources for my programmer, and I want to deliver my ideas with clarity. I understand the art process for 3d games... but I never thought my brain wouldn't be able to connect concept for 2d games.

Does any of this make sense? I just need like, a checklist or something. Let's discuss what YOU folks do to communicate your ideas clearly in a scenario such as this.

    Maybe I'm over-thinking this?
Thanks for your guy's feedback, time, and 2 cents. I was a bit low on change.

Yeah. Over thinking I guess. Any tips specifically that may differ from 3D concept (besides the extra D)?

Depending on what part of the game you are doing- assets, backgrounds or UI they should allow you to do style sheets from some art direction given to you, eg:
"Its like pretty woman meets aliens"
So you have a starting point; if not go crazy.
Is there not a design doc to work from?

2d games generally allow more artistic freedom 3d is 3d, hard to get too much style in it with a poly budget

There is a design document to some degree. It's more of a loose and local project. So I do have the convenience of talking to them in real life, which is nice.

I guess I'm wondering if it would be more concept work, or more direct art for the game. I just haven't seen very much "concept" art for any 2d game.

Thank you for your help on the topic.
