    ROUND #236, GODZILLA MONSTER!

    topic:

    ROUND#236, GODZILLA MONSTER!

This week we're going to take a look at the world of the classic monster Godzilla, and take on the challenge of creating one of the giant beasts to terrorize Tokyo.

In the Godzilla franchise common animals have been mutated into gigantic building crushing monsters. Usually through nuclear radiation of some kind. Your job this week is to choose a common existing animal, and mutate it into a terror as tall as a skyscraper!

    Requirements this week...

    - the monster you create must be at least 10 stories tall. Over 100 feet high.

    - the monster must be mutated from an existing animal, but must be changed in ways much more than just size. Add, and change anatomy as you see fit, don't just up-size some animal to make it monstrous.

    - the monster you create this week must be mutated by being exposed to nuclear radiation. Therefore, I would like to see some part of its anatomy glowing to show that its been radiated.

    Deadline:

I like it! How common does the existing animal have to be?

dahlia: not super common. just has to be based on an existing animal.

My first idea was... giant mutated Monkey!

At first it doesn't sound very originally since it may remind King Kong a lot, but there's a lots of different races of monkeys. I think i will let these idea to expand

Gadbury: cool stuff, try pushing the scale of the creature a bit more, it doesn't appear to be at least 100 ft tall.

After thinking long and hard, I came up with drawing a mutant pidgeon, then I decided that was too lame so I chose the Snapping turtle. Lineart about 85-90% complete at this stage. Basically the tail and shell still need some work while the rest is more or less done, legs may need to be repositioned a bit though, they look a bit awkward.

This seems like an awesome topic. I think I might have a few ideas for this..
Would be the first time for me to try this. So its gonna be hard!
Gadbury, Rob Powell: Those look awesome!

Edit: My first idea was a giant lobster.. called Lobzilla, obviously
But it didnt quite work out. Still think I'm gonna go with lobsters, though. But maybe a different approach

Luckers - lobster! thats a cool idea. I know its a WIP but I imagine this creature to have a lot of smaller spikes and textures (pretty much like godzilla mixed with alaskan king crab)

thats pretty sweet! love the lighting, but i hope you dont mind my shitty quick paintover. because the rest of the lighting is so realistic it didnt make too much sense that the creature is so lit up so i imagined it to be something more like this! hope this helps

Whiskey Sour - Very nicely rendered. You will, however, have to distance the design significantly from a french bulldog. At the moment it looks just like a massive french bulldog on it's hindquarters, not a mutated french bulldog.

Gadbury, from what I see here, it just needs further definition. It looks like the white on it's throat could easily be a centralized spatter-type of speckle pattern. If you make it a bit more symmetrical, and allow for larger speckles, extending from the throat to the outer frill (perhaps enforce that it's really speckles by having a slight hint of an outline on larger patches of the patterning, it could work very well as simply being a bioluminescent patterning.

gadbury, for the glowing part, i think u should put a fat glowing goo pocket under his mouth, i dont know how is the name in english, but its a piece of skin that some fat people have overgrowth under the chin.... looks awesome anyways. (:

Gadbury: I agree with Si Swe that glowing under the chin seems to work, maybe even some glowing from inside it's mouth too. to show that it's body is full of radiation

here's where I'm at with rendering and everything, still in the process of painting over the linework, plus I still need to add colour variation here and there, more yellows and greens and even some reds maybe, and of course the glowing, still have to figure that bit out, prolly cracked skin or glow from in between it's scales or something...lately I've had a bit of a migraine so that slowed me down a bit, I was hoping to get most of it done today, but we'll see. As you can see my creature is currently floating in the sky, that's mainly because I'm still trying to figure out how to approah doing a city landscape cuz I've never done one before...I was thinking maybe he's in a park inside the city or something like that....

Gadbury- I too kind of like the glowing chin, you could definitely run with that. Great job with the lighting in the scene!
Rob Powell- Great linework, and promising start on the coloring.
Whiskey Sour- nicely rendered, but agree needs to be more mutated. Also, double check his head/neck, something seems off about the angles there... it seems maybe his face is turned more towards the viewer than the rest of his head/neck.

Here's the current state of my lemur Godzilla. He barely makes the 10 story mark when stretched out, and he's not so much a mutant as just a muscular lemur at the moment. I probably won't have time to finish anyway so I'll just go with it.

First time painting a building. Not super happy with how they turned out.

    Holy flying octopus!

Here's a 20 minute sketch done on top of a photo I took in the Keys. I figured, why not make a giant mutated invertebrate? I need to work on the "mutated" aspect a bit more.

Rob, I love the expression on your creature- his head tweaked a bit to the side makes him look very curious, almost as though he's amused by his own monstrous existence.

Question (however dumb it may be), can the godzilla be 100 ft long (not high)? Not sure if you were specifically height-oriented.

Also, good job rob, whiskey, and eclectix for your starting pieces, but don't forget these badasses need to glow! Sparkle sparkle all that jazz.

So spray that fairy glitter! Or something.
