Hi people,

This is my second sketchthread from now on in effort to become a better artist.
I've been working under the radar for a while thinking i wasn't ready yet..
now i realise that there will never be a perfect moment to be ready so i might a well start over today.

dude, not bad at all! love that top one with the flexing guy. that one shows alot of knowledge of lighting, and color. the others could use as much attention as the top one, but all in all id say your doing good!

gestures look good, your really better than you think IMO

but the last guy with daggers you posted looks like his forearm got fused into his bicep

i think focus less on detail and more on structure

Holy...crap...How the hell do you make those edges so crisp? Is it the sharpen tool or something? I HAVE to know : )

This was awesome, some serious edge control goin' on, need to see more!

Toffers, haha actually i was being really lazy.
i did the hannes thing where you use the select tool on the silhouette of the figure.. render the edges, remove the selection and its very crispy.

i would not recommend doing it though! its a bad habit.

Man... you are so epic at getting depth/form/fullness in your drawings. I think it's the effect of your brushstrokes and edges - things just really pop off the page. You also have an awesome sense of energy in your work. Your gestures are crazy, man. @__@

I do think the blurriness of some of your edges can be detrimental to your paintings, but.. I mean, you have so many skills. I'd really like to see a long, fully-finished painting from you. Mostly because I think it'd be fantastic and I want to see it, but it'd also help you/me realize what you need to work on, cuz things that hurt your quick work might not be an issue in longer pieces, right? If that makes sense?

really bringing my work to a high finish is something i need to work on.

For today some armor studies, and a stillife as a substitute for not having any actual armor pieces. came out pretty bad haha.

I tried applying my armor studies to this sketch from imagination.
!t doesn't look like one coherent design because i somehow decided to isolate each little area.. learned alot though.

Good stuff! The legs are a little bit confusing I think, it's hard to make out what's going on and how she is standing. Maybe try to enlarge the canvas and draw the complete pose (and crop it afterwards) to get a better feeling for the pose? Just thinking out loud!

Cranberry, I agree the image is off. i didn't plan the image at all.

I'm forcing myself to make it a habit to work from imagination more often.
Some sketches and a portrait that looks a bit stylised.

Hi Martijn,
Great start for a great sketchbook! your posts are so loaded with pictures!
You must be working all day to get this amount of work done, and its already showing. From your first post to your last one you already seem to be getting better!
And usually it takes pages of a sketchbook to see that kind of progress

I've got one critique for you right now. Might be able to come up with more later.
When I see you using dark colours in your painting. I see you quickly jumping towards black without any colour in it. This way the painting gets flattened.
When looking at artist wich are great with light/dark you seem them using much more different colours in their dark areas.
Look at this painting made by Rembrandt for example.

He is using magneta purple in his dark areas wich already gives the painting a lot more depth.
Just something I want you to think of next time you are grabbing black on your colour pallete for your shades

Luckers: Thanks for pointing that out, will make a big difference!

i'm aware that you shouldn't use pure white or black and usually go for some sort of color in the higlights and darkest darks,
perhaps changing rbg web to rgb monitor to prevent darkening images when posted on the web might help aswell.
