I'm at the point in my life where I'm searching for something. I guess it's, what do you do with your life phase?
I know it's kind of unrelated to my searching, but I always wondered why do some people choose to do art?

i think it's because people have something to say artistically and it's fun.

I would go crazy if I didn't do it in some shape or form.
I just do art because I feel like it. :/ It's fun to me.
I'm too fuckin' smart to do anything else...

I want to be able to create worlds with my hands
It's enjoyable. Enjoyable enough so that even when I make a mistake it doesn't bother me. Gives me a nice satisfied and happy feeling at the end of the day, yet still gives me the want to drive forward.
Because it's cool!!!! And fun!!!

I really can't think of other reason why I draw.
It's fun.

Always challenging, and it keeps me sane.
I never wanted to do art. I want to be a lumberjack.
For me it's to inspire others.
To create something, that hasn't been there before, something that will make the viewer feel amazed, and captured.
Something they will remember, something they might take something from.
It's finally about creating something out of nothing.
You could create a whole new world out of nothing, just like that.
You can bend the rules, and make whatever You want happen.
Of course to be able to bend the rules, You must first know what rules there are, and understand them. You can't use or change something You don't understand. Then You could create whatever You want, and make it believable to the viewer never the less, because You apply real world rules to it, or modified rules, it will still feel familiar, or possible. In this case I mean things like perspective, light (the way it interacts with surfaces to create what we see), anatomy (which, if You learn it thoroughly once, will make You realise how similar muscles and bones of humans and animals in the end are, and allow You again, to create something new from that knowledge), and if You were to do animation, laws of physics will make You understand the rules of motion and weight.
It's also about sharing the vision in Your mind with others.
Make what You see visible for others.
A good artist is basically also a scientist.
One who is interested in what he sees. Who is interested in understanding what he sees. Because ultimately all this knowledge of understanding the world, will help You to create worlds of Your own.
An artist, who understands what he is doing, for example, has no so called 'style' per se, but rather, he chooses how he wants his drawings/paintings to look. How simplified he wants something to look, how stylized, for his intention he wants it to look, or how many of the real world laws, I mentioned above, he sees fit to apply. All matching the vision he wishes to create, or what he wants the viewer to feel or take from it (for example in a sequential story).
Very well said Shindoh, except I would substitute "scientist" for alchemist....
A little fyi, the Art Card in the book of Tarot, (ATU XIV) has also been referred to as Alchemy, or Temperance (bleh)

I do art mainly because it is a creative process. I cannot imagine to do anything non-creative for living. And there is also the part in me that always wants to improve.
I've spent my whole life perfecting creative tasks such as music instruments, recording, programming, design. It is all art in some form, but I've realized that I've waited far too long to work on my (analogue and digital) drawing and painting skills. So here I am on a journey to becoming an even more versatile asset in creating new things that I already am. And I hope I will never stop seeking for more.![]()
So I have an excuse for having an "artistic temperament".
Whatever the hell THAT means.
Actually I'm a writer first and an artist second, but I still do art because even though I do have some natural talent at it, it's largely untapped and underdeveloped, whereas I've been writing fiction at the top of my game for so long that sometimes I feel like I don't have anywhere to go with it, and that I've hit the peak of my abilities in that arena.
But with art, I like looking forward to getting better and seeing steady improvement. It feels like being back in school, and lets me see things with fresh eyes.
Plus in a roundabout way it actually improves my writing when it isn't directly competing with it for my free time.
Hey you! Yes, you! Crit me!

Because it's an interesting problem I'm getting somewhere with. If I was interested in and any good at writing pathfinding algorithms or extracting spleens from people I'd probably be doing that instead.

Because it's about the only thing I can do decently.
Because when I have ideas, I just need to draw them. When I'm bored or depressed, drawing is the cure. When I'm excited or optimisstic, I get incredibly hopeful about my impending productivity in art. For other people, similar can be said for writing, cooking, math, whatever. I sure am glad that there's people who feel this way about other things, especially like science and discovering cures, and humanitarian activisim and whatnot. Sometimes I feel bad that I am not one who developed a passion for such things, but I can't change my passion. And, as others have pointed out, the art we create makes people happy, thoughtful and inspired, and that's important, too!
It makes me feel at peace.
Cause I want to draw cool shit![]()
I could list a million reasons why I do art, but that would take too long when I should be painting.
So I will say simply, I do art because it makes me happy and one day it will make others happy.

There are many different reasons, most dealing with destruction, so you go in the opposite direction when all other avenues are explored or thought to death and become tiresome and boring.
USEFUL STUFF!
