First off: Some colored pencil anatomy studies. I really love the amount of grip colored pencil has, i tend to hit lines easier and be less 'scribbly'.

Finally CA is back to normal! Time to update my sketchbook =)

Here are some oil paintings i made in class. This trimester we are experimenting with
different styles on still-lifes. Trying to mimick different techniques to see what's out there
and what suits you best.



Some eggs, this one had to be painted in the style of the flemish primitives, meaning as natural/realistically as possible.



Underpainting (raw umber only) done for a still-life with various objects (skull, bull statue, dices and ribbon)



Bunch of bread, attempted rembrand style, with the use of a palette knife and loads of paint.



Reproduction of 'Head of a peasant' by Ilya Repin

Woo it's nice to see some traditional art - the still life bread is excellent.

Still though, you're sketches are my favourite. You've pretty much mastered your construction lines and they look absolutely out of this world. I just love the life drawing and landscapes, really stylistic, technically correct but sketchilious all at the same time. Bravo sir.

Haven't had the time for some finished work, but here's some quick random (ballpoint) sketchwork from photo's and some (pencil) vehicle sketches from imagination.

Also included a study of a bronze statue in coloured pencil.

Really beautiful hatching style. So economical with those pencil studies. Especially with the earlier rock studies, the gradients you achieve are simple yet perfect~

I truly truly Love your work!! Thank you for thefeedback on my skechbook. you are right somewhat about my digistudies. It's not that I get bored with them but I somehow don't feel like I'm actually learning when I practice doing studies in digital. I think it has something to do with my process. I do as much as I can and the instant it feels like I'm not learning I stop I move on.
I did a speed paint in acrylics the other day of my trainer and the image, the process, value and colours are stuck in my head - exactly what I wish would happen digitally.

do you feel you learn more working traditionally than digitally?

About your question, i think it's hard to say in which medium i learn more. With a new medium (oils for example) i tend to think that i do, but that's also because you get to know the new material, while the technical level is increasing normally. I do have the impression i get 'better' results more easily while working digitally but it feels not really genuine in a way. In digital i can do things i cannot do traditionally (yet), so in a way i do think i have to work harder (and learn more) traditionally. Digital is so fast and easy, you have no actual material and that saves alot of time and therefore you have more freedom and think in another way you would think with paint.

If i take a piece and build it step by step, making sure i pass every stage in picture making (the concept, perspective, colors, composition, light direction, etc. everything), only than i think learn the most, because i have worked all facets. But that doesn't matter if i do that digitally or traditionally, because what i technically get out of it would be the same, though i would feel that traditionally i would have accomplished more because it's more of a 'real craft' with real materials.

Maybe for you it's important for a piece to try to set a goal in your mind, try to achieve it and then reflect on what your have learned instead of asking yourself if you're learning at all (while working). If you're constantly monitoring yourself, doesn't that take the pleasure out of it? I think every study has some value because it will add to your visual library and add to the routine and therefore you are learning even if you are not 'aware' of it.

Not really, It can feel like work at times but developing yourself is always work, but it's fun work, I think if someone gets too analytic of things then yeah definitely it takes the fun
out of it for me, but if I don't monitor myself I won't know if I'm making progress. I definitely thank you for reminding me when I set out to do a study I should have a goal in mind compared to just drawing and seeing if I learn.
a lot of my studies you saw were me setting down to achieve something from the study and bounce once I think I have acquired it. I won't go into detail but I plan on simplifying things down even further, I think it is also down to the process of doing a study. sure there are many ways to tackle a problem but some work better than others from person to person.
