rlederer [UPDATE 11/13/11] TESV:Skyrim art thread

Hiya! Whew! Man, it's been waaay too long but I've been busy I can finally start showing some of the work I've been doing for the last 3 years for Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. I hope anyone out there who buys the game enjoys it as much as we enjoyed developing it. Also there's a podcast diary with interviews of myself and pal/cohort Adam Adamowicz, Matt Carofano(AD), and Todd Howard on the making of Skyrim over at Bethblog. With that includes a short video, a side by side comparisons of concepts and game assets plus even more art. Go on over and check it out if you have a few minutes.

More to come! Thanks for viewing! Cheers, Ray

Oh, awesome. I am absolutely stoked for this game, in no small part due to your concepts. So much less vanilla fantasy than Oblivion. I love it.

@Davie: Thank you so much! I hope you enjoy the game. I'm still playing it and will probably start an new character once I get my retail copy. Right now I'm playing as an Altmer Mage. What's really cool is how depending on where you choose to use your perks it will really alter the play experience so that it never feels the same twice. This team is truly amazing!

@Jeff Lafferty: Thank you Jeff! How's CO treating you?

@E.DIN: Thank you E. I really wanted to convey a PNW vibe with the climate in that particular region.

Thanks doleman! I had fun with the Mehrunes Dagon image. I like the dog lapping at the fetid water oblivious to the massive mysterious ruin in front of him.

    This fanart rocks the casbah.

One of my favorite things about CA is how many geekalicious fans there are, and how willing they are to post badassery like this.

For some reason the meat selection is my favorite, I have no idea why. Lol. Probably because you gave each piece such personality!

Hi Kellye, thanks for the very kind compliments but I need to correct you on one thing: I'm employed at Bethesda Game Studio as a concept artist and spent the last 3 years working on Skyrim

Incredible work, I've been closely following Skyrim as I'm a huge fan of Bethesda's games. I particularly enjoy the architectural landscape concepts, I was using this painting as a desktop for a few months.. http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6220/...09d0ec60_o.jpg

I appreciate the way the cities and ruins seemingly grow out of and shape around the surrounding landscapes vs being isolated free standing structures, as seen in these Skyrim concept paintings..

    http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6051/...a46f4961_o.jpg

    http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6225/...35cf7d6e_o.jpg

Love how the city expands across the arched rock formation here - http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6120/...a78fdf1b_o.jpg

I noticed this with the city that has the waterfall inside of it too, was that accidentally happening through the design process or was it intended for you to conceptualize the ruins/cities with the landscape directly influencing it from the beginning?

PS - the ability to directly control or turn into a dragon would be a great idea for future dlc!

These are awesome...and I'm really digging the Dark Brotherhood costume; looks much better than Oblivions.'

oooh, I really want this game...buuut, I will have to pass as I would end up neglecting my art which I've already done for too long.

Thanks for all the kind words Aeron. Most of that landscape stuff was done by the incomparable Adam Adamowicz. I designed Solitude which is the city perched on top of the natural arch. The waterfall runs through Markarth which is an ancient Dwemer ruin. The waterfall was likely Adam's idea but I don't remember honestly. Hopefully he'll post some of his stuff and discuss his process.

Thanks bish0p2004. I labored over that one for a while. I have a feeling people will either love it or hate it. I'd actually like to go back and refine it and make it more stealthy but it's too late now. Sometimes you just have to let them go

Thanks for taking the time to share so much of the fantastic artwork from The Elder Scrolls - It's very cool to see some of the magic that goes into creating such a great series of games.

I can't wait to play it in 2 weeks and see your work brought to 'life'.

NeechMonkey: Thanks so much. I hope you enjoy it

    Lord Dubu: Thanks!

Maelstrom78: thanks man. Make you get out and see some sunlight from time to time

    Leo: thanks again!

CKWorth: thanks for buying the CE! That really means a lot to me and Adam. They really went all out with the art book. They fit as much as they could in there and it is jam packed but I think it only represents about 30% of the work we did. On top of that, it's an extremely high quality presentation. If you like our work, then I don't think you'll be disappointed...

I was just blown away, your work is intense and eye catching. You have a wonderful rhythm to your work and just the right amount of grittiness to really compliment it.
Also your rendering is just top notch, everything looks like the material it should feel like if someone was to reach in their screen and try handling it.

    Really impressive work!
