so awesome to see you are whipping out concepts already, gratz on the job for the game company! i would like to see you do studies related to the pieces you do in the future, some drapery studies would have helped that cook up there quite alot, when you draw from head what you havent drawn from life you just cant make an accurate depiction of it no matter how pretty and stylized it is, its still attached, keep it up man im loving your efforts i just think that if you studied a subject before trying to draw a concept for it would be so much better keep on having fun dude!

Unfortunately it was only for the Riot's contest, not a commisioned job. But I know I'll get there soon . Thanks for the tips, I tend to forget the importance of the studies over the piece and try to rush head-on too often.

Anyway, in a little break between the photos to retouch. More to be scanned

Some sketches from the classes I've been attending last month. First thing that struck me was 8-head canon, so far I've been seeing 7-head as a rule of thumb. But apart from weird IMO side view, it's pretty handy.

And these are more solid concept-arts made during this 2 days class.

Tea knight description (provided by tutors)
    - cartoon
    - knight that used to fight a dragons in his good old days
    - since there are no dragons left (or none been seen for many years at least) he switched to the wandering tea&biscuit business; tea is made from tomatoes
    - he operates from his horse all the time - he cultivate tomatoes, prepare a tea from it in a special tea-machine, bake biscuits in the same machine; everything without dismounting his horse
    - gatherer - a lot of chests, sacks and storage place

The toad (yup, the previous toad in this thread is the same one):
    - realistic or close to
    - pirate cook
    - obesse
    - mean
    - doesn't have one eye; her face is scarred
    - her trademark is a "pygmy-sausage", which is made from... well, pygmys; she has it with her ALL the time
    - she really do not like pygmys, as well as unwelcomed guests in her kitchen

The toad in love (second part of this excercise)
    - lost weight
    - begun healthy lifestyle
    - lost her temper (a bit)

And, today's second approach to the CG rendered Toad. At least the beginning sketch of it.

And the CGed Toad is ready. Do someone know good tutorial over the coloring the grayscale pieces? I tried to follow tips given by Xelar at the beginning of this thread, yet I feel colors completely different when Im trying to put them on the value sketch and when painting them "live" (like in the LoL artwork).

you have great sense of mass in some of your environments. My favorite is probably the the large mountain thing in smoke/fog.
Keep working on the anatomy, you're getting there!

Nice work on those studies, just keep going. Nice character too, I like that the spoon looks like a helmet
Matt kohr at ctrlpaint has a tutorial how to colour black & white paintings, you have to buy it though

$10? I can live with that . Thanks for the tip, the tut is downloaded and ready to view.

As for a char, it will be reworked yet. Guy who was tutor at the character design course gave me few tips to try. A higher head:body ratio to maintain the grotesque of the charactaer, spoon leaning down to stress its heavyweight and returning the belt with utilities to add some story and attributes.

    Toad vol. 3

Pushed the style to the realism, tried some blending modes tricks from the Ctrl+Paint video (thanks Bowandbrush ), although I can't say that this kind of workflow suits me completely. Maybe it's a matter of a habit.

Some previous studies (faces muscles again, since I noticed many problems in this matter), and TR initial thumbs of the ideas. Also I decided to push one of the value thumbs further.

Pretty sweet environments man. I'd love to see you combine that with constructions more often.

Yeah, I'll need to get into enviros somewhat soon, but first - the TR contest and a little update. The shape in the background resembled a skull so much that it would be a pitty not to push this further
