Edited the mountain study a little bit - I didn't move forward on it very far but I figured I'm doing another study (traditionally) in progress right now so I thought I'd just focus on the other one and post it when it's done.

    A figure drawing,

another urban landscape - decided to stay in pencil this time

When I had access to a cheap scanner, it didn't give better results than photos about my sb pages. My boyfriend has a kinda good camera but even so, I often get a bit blurry result, that's why it's good to make multiple shots of the same page. I experienced sketches on white pages are tricky to shot and I definitely need a lot of light to do it a bit better than horrible.

I like the background and middleground in your enviro but not the foreground. It has too many spots with contrast so my eyes don't know where to look and it ruins the beautiful calm feeling the mountains create. I don't know how one should do it well, I just feel it's not quite right this way. The more colorful but not so interesting foreground is too busy, like, everywhere.

@ShiNIN I definitely need to work on foliage, I have a hard time rendering it and yeah looking at it now I realize it is really busy. Thanks for your input

Here's a figure study I'm working on - I had to keep hiking the contrast up which made it harder and harder to clean up- but I think it's more visible now.

I've been MIA because I went on a roadtrip to Arches national park - it was a very rewarding experience, mentally, physically, inspirationally...

I'm returning with a renewed sense of motivation. And an understanding that getting into this mode of practice is creating a habit of drawing for many hours a day. I was drawing 2 hours a day which is not nearly as much as I needed to.

Note to self (and others): Remember that with time and repetition, drawing will become more and more fun and more rewarding. Learn to love it more each day.

So here's an updated figure study- and the first rough sketch for an illustration I'm working on.

Oh- and also another reminder to self: if your brush starts chugging and getting slow - take the time to figure out how to fix it again, you cannot sketch with a slow brush like that.

here's some star wars pen and ink drawings I've done. They have a ton of little mistakes but I had a lot of fun really committing to a clean ink drawing. I don't have the control to do line drawings like this in digital.

another further step on this illustration, I'm a little frustrated with it - every stoke I make turns it into this blobby mess. I just gotta put the hours in to figure it out.

I'm really sick with mono, chugging along slowly.

Been trying to take care of myself physically and mentally. I'm really interested in comic art right now - this is a study from Northlanders - Sven. Proportions are wonky on the head but it doesn't matter as much cause it's comics, huzzah!! Al
so, my goal was more to learn to color (which actually took so little time compared to the line drawing)

And another study from Andreas Rocha.

Derp derp, here's some more stuff - had a hard time keeping this draugr painting clean. I kind of accepted at the end it was going to be messy. Too many layers got too confusing.

landscape study 4-6 hours ish - learning how to use tool presets more effectively. The picture was super saturated - actually more saturated than this. Again, struggling with cleanliness.

Yoo Liquorbleu thanks for stopping by at my sketchbook. You have improved a lot since october! im impressed. i really like your figure study in post#153. also the above image is good . Try to avoid using overly saturated images cause it can kill the natural look. Im not sure if your photo reference was tweaked on the computer. I went into photoshop and transfered your painting into black and white scale. Try to isolate your values like you did in your landscape painting in post#151. In that painting u separated your values very well. For the following image i posted, i just broke it down into 4 different layers that i see. Based on atmospheric perspective, the biggest thing that stands out to me is that in layer 3, you have values that are about the same as the values used in layer 1. I know that you said the image was oversaturated but in nature, the values in layer 3 would never get as dark as the values in layer 1. Im sure you already know this, but as things move back into space, they become lighter and less saturated. And I also pointed out 2 focal points, A and B. I hope that helps. Keep working hard mate!

Yogeshj25 - wow wow! thanks for your thoughts- very thoughtful and it really did make me think. I have consciously thought about atmospheric perspective so much but it didn't even occur to me while painting this.

Here -I wanna post the reference pic so we can compare values. When I squint my eyes I can see - the mountains are still pretty dark but they do seem to have more atmospheric perspective than in my painting.

Also - thanks for those focal points - focal point B bugs me but I got to the point where I just needed to try a new painting.

In other news - I did this little sketch for reddit's daily sketch group. It's Alistar from League of legends. It's got a lot of problems but it was pretty fun - I used some reference images and thought up a little pose. I can feel I am getting better at original compositions - slowly!

Hi there, nice SB going on.

I'd like to add something to the following landscape.
    Name: mountainstudy.jpg
Views: 185
Size: 83.0 KB

I think a way tp improve it would be the composition.
You must watch you rythms and proportions even or maybe especially in landscapes. It's not a bad pic by all means, but the "layers" are all more or less the same size if you see what I mean.

Change sizes or proportions, make some parts bigger and some smaller and keep and eye open for crossing lines, they help to implement a feeling of depth.
    Keep it up.

shockowaffel - I do see, the repetition of the size of the layers is making things pretty boring. Thanks so much for your input - another important thing for me to keep in mind.

Here's a rock and a frog study. I need to do more rock studies, I can't get the right texture I want but I'm coming closer.

Sketch of John Snow that I left unfinished

also a little concept of the Sword in the Stone. I saw that job up on the boards, knowing I'm not ready to apply for a job yet- but I decided to try to go for the illustration anyway.

I've really been focusing on value recently. I decided to try to paint skin today and WOW that was really difficult. I had to stop trying to paint in color and decided to do a value study first before I added color.

Here's where I got so far.

PS. been doing enviro speedpaint value studies but I don't like em enough to post them anywhere I'll post one if those studies look like they help.

Here's some of those speedpaintings I was talking about.

They run anywhere from 15 min to probably an hour

In the order in which they appear: Frederic Edwin Church, Thomas moran, Albert Bierstadt, Thomas Moran

Nice lil speedpaints. In your own painting, I like the rocks closer to us (but maybe I shouldn't say foreground here, IDK) but the ones beneath are a bit too similar to the ones before them (somewhat boring), leaving the middle part of the painting empty... We see some nice rocks but there's no real focal point. Our eyes are leading somewhere but there's nothing that deserves our attention. The little pool thing is a bit low and it's not that interesting either.

Here's the finished study in color - figured out that group on deviantart that posted the reference doesn't take digital art. Bitches!

    Anyway, here it is.

And this weird mosaic version cause I thought it was funny/interesting.

wow you have improved so much since your first page.
The environment studies are great, Im struggling with the same sort of stuff in my environments, I always feel as though they are messy and need more focus.
My only advice I can give, and its mostly apparent in your figures and sketches, but try and focus a little on line quality, making your sketch lines longer rather than unsure 'chicken-scratches'. Its something that I find hard to improve, but it does get there slowly (I am very much still in the process) other than that I love your dedication and am looking forward to seeing more from you Thanks for dropping by my sketchbook and giving me advice

Did a longer speedpaint, this time by artist Min Yum.

I'm having a hard time making it look not pixelated. I'm not sure why.

This week I've been working on mostly pencil drawings. Working from imagination a lot - trying to draw from reference and then draw the same thing from memory.

    Rhinos are exclusively reference

I get really lazy with uploading pencils - mostly because it takes so long to take pictures and edit each one of them and the quality doesn't even turn out great. But things I'm doing in pencil have really been helping so I figured it'd be worthwhile to post em.

And an attempt from imagination, not so happy with it but it was really fun setting up my own perspective grid from scratch.
