I'm not sure how much it'd cost to go to a life drawing workshop, but friends/family are also perfect and free (hopefully!) substitutes for that.

@jmartland: Thanks man! The only good tip I can really give you at this point is to draw and paint and whatever else day in and day out. Oh, and totally surround yourself with inspirational work and people. The key is to stay motivated! Your incentive has to be internal also!

And the unfinished, never-to-be-touched-again figure drawing I'd started last week. I only had 2 hours to spend on it! Another 2 hours would've been great. In any case, I got a lot of positive feedback and critiques, so I'm not too grumpy wumpy about it.

I noticed you're having a little trouble with measurements of the face on post #36. Since you can't really measure with your drawing utensil digitally, I recommend using the rectangular marquee tool(I assume you're using Photoshop), doing that helped me a lot.

Ambiguity: Yeah, I totally see what you mean. I'll definitely begin to use the marquee tool! I've seen Daarken using it in some of his demos. Thank you for bringing that to my attention; reminders are always helpful.

Finals have already begun, so I've tried to squeeze in some studies of my hand, faces, and a doodle of a skull from ze brainz. Ah, and a quick figure thing from imagination; I intend on working on it as a character concept.

A portrait study, about a 45 minutes into it.

It's been a little over a month since I've updated this sketchbook...but the fire in my belly has returned! Might have something to do with my life drawing class starting next week. I have been reading books, however! That is something, at least.

So, the first two are related. I was getting frustrated with the blue color pencil not erasing in my physical sketchbook, so I scanned it and corrected some of the things bothering me to the best of my knowledge. I'll take it somewhere.

That portrait... I'm picking at it, and it's relaxing to go back to from time to time. Drew some people on the bus, but not as many as I'd wanted. They kept leaving! Stop leaving, damn it! I'm commemorating you... ; ~ ;

A quick crap-quality "study" from a crap-quality photo I came across in an old sketchbook somewhere around here. Not very satisfying. Theeeen I decided to start a man-thing and still picking at it. It's still rough.

And finally a study of Gottfried Bammes' depiction of the skeletal and musculature parts of the leg. I drew the right leg only, and copy/reflected the selection onto an overlay layer in Photoshop. Mind = blown. So stoked! I'm going to label the muscles and blah in a bit. Ah, and I just built my way up from the underlying bones, which were drawn in lightly beforehand.

So currently the focus is legs. Legs, legs, legs. Sexy legs, chubby sexy legs, muscular sexy legs.

I've been doing leg studies (working my way through Bammes), drawings from Life Drawing class and whatever else, so I've go a lot more. I just need to scan/photograph them in the computer lab at school.

I could stare at these last drawings from the last two posts for weeks on end. They are just... beautiful. The perspective you give to their feet is what hooks me in.

Gorgeous SB! Keep it up! Also, don't be discouraged by art education being impossibly expensive... artwise, you can make it even without formal education, just check out some self-taught artists like Dave Rapoza, Algenpfleger, Brad Rigney, Greg Manchess, Jesper Ejsing, and so on... I mean, just check out a few webpages of good artists/illustrators/concept designers, see how little space is dedicated to their CVs (if any). Feng Zhu talked about this many times: one good thing about this profession is that what lands you jobs is your portfolio, not your CV or the art school you went to. I'm not saying formal education is bad or unnecesary--quite on the contrary, it can help you tremendously, but if you can't afford it, the proof is out there that you can make it even without a degree [=

I actually went through a recent funk about whether or not I'd be able to get to where I want to be if I didn't go to an art school, but a state university will do just fine methinks. The encouragement that I've received really kicked my ass back into gear. Johannes' sketchbook -- the record of his progress, will forever be an inspiration to go back to, as well. I really look up to Jana Schirmer too. Just thinking and talking about them fills my chest with feelings. Thank you. C:

You've more or less nailed the figure drawing! Though, watch out, the last figure has the torso too long and legs too short.
Don't worry about going for further art education or not. Either way, with the figures you're doing now, you can easily transpose the form knowledge into painting with values and be a kickass artist.
You remind me of Ivan Laliashvili http://ivany86.deviantart.com/ , who first drew mind blowing figures in college and then went on digital painting.

Some very nice figure drawings and head studies. Sometimes the proportions aren't correct- you tend to make the torso too long in comparison with the legs. Also, pay attention to edges and contours, sometimes the edges look too sharp on the figures- really study what you're looking at and decide if an edge is soft or hard. Edges are very much linked to tone, usually the higher the tonal contrast the sharper the edge is e.g. the bottom of a foot (dark) resting on the floor or a chair(light)would be quite a sharp edge. The rounded form of a muscle in the arm or one of the legs may have a softer edge- it's all in the seeing. I hope that makes sense and is useful
