    ROUND #232, Maturation

    topic:

    ROUND#232, Maturation

    Wow. I can't believe that this week marks 1 year since Si_Swe and I started hosting cow. Thanks to everyone for making it a great year! we'll try keeping the topics interesting.

    Since this is the 1 year anniversary for us we thought we'd build a round based on the time frame of a year. Here goes...

    The creature you'll be designing this week is born exceptionally docile, has a vegetarian diet, and is extremely beautiful. It lives with very minimal worries, and is content with a quiet peaceful existence.

    It lives this happy life until it reaches the age of 1 year. At this point the pretty little beasty starts to go through some "changes", those being a form of rapid puberty that lasts 1 week.

    After the rough week of speedy maturation, the cute little critter emerges into adulthood with an entirely different look, along with a new violent temper. As an adult the creature loses most of its beauty, becomes strictly carnivorous, and loves nothing more than ripping apart any unfortunate living thing that looks at it the wrong way.

    Now, show us the before and after of this creature. One showing its cute friendly childhood, one showing its ugly violent adulthood. You have the option of showing them both in one image, or entering 2 separate images.

    This will be a 2 week cow!

    Requirements this week...

    - the child form must be beautiful, and not have any physical attributes of a violent fighting creature.

    - the adult form must be ugly, and must have acquired some kind of biological weaponry like spikes, horns, claws, fangs, etc. Through its metamorphosis.

    - the child and adult forms must share some physical traits so that you can tell that they are of the same species.

    Deadline:

    October 19th, 9:00pm PST (GMT -8 )

    Well congrats (lark and Si_Swe!
    This is a neat topic, kinda reminds me of beauty and the beast, but this time they are the same species, and two weeks, well perfect for making two creatures

    Sounds really cool, although I would also love to see the midpoint of the creature in the maturation stage when it is half cute and half terrifying. I intend to maybe add that in too if that's cool.

    Happy (paper) anniversary!

    This week's (forthnight?) topic reminds me of pokemon where some players don't want their pokemon to evolve into less cute critters.

    I never understood why people didn't evolve their pokemon, I had a lvl 99 blastoise and I would regularly fight (and win) with my friends via a cable.
    Oh, the good old days of cables and 2d images, what happened that made people think 3d was better?.

    That's wicked cool Jagder! totally fits the topic so far as I can tell. I suppose the adult could be a little more obviously aggressive, but what do I know?

    jagder - the adult form needs to evolve some form of natural weaponry. that doesn´t read from your image so clearly now. if u add that it´ll be perfect

    Lovely render Jagder, though I agree you probably show the more violent/wild side of your creature.

    Here's an idea for the children phase of mine, not sure if it achieves the "beautiful" required though?

    Me thinks I'll have a go at this one, as long as job hunting art tests don't get too much in the way...

    @jagder: maybe show his teeth or some claws, that'd be a simple fix and would fit the brief - like, open his lower jaw, letting it dangle menacingly with some rabid-looking drool coming from his fangs or something like that. Or even just some spinal spikes.

    @scimthar: looking cute. reminds me of a shitzoo (chinese dog?). Interested in seeing the adult!

    jadger - great start, kinda looking like a normal adult as is..maybe fit some wicked claws, bony protusions, spiked tail or whatever that'd make sense on a canine-looking creature

    scimthar - critter's currently cute, the ''beautiful'' part could come from somewhere else apart from the anatomy

    quick sketch for the children and mature creature - the beautiful part will prolly be in a colouful skin pigmentation

    it´s probably even better to start with the beauutiful form i guess.

    Nice! Yeah, I still prefer 2D most of the time too. Stylistic range is still a lot larger on the 2D field and with 3D I still see polys. I can't count them by hand anymore, but you can still clearly see them. 2D games also age much more graceful. 3D games look so old a year later. I love pixel graphics as well since I grew up with the NES and SNES ^^

    The word ‘anarchy’ comes from the ancient Greek αναρχία in which αν meant ‘without’ and αρχία meant first a military ‘leader’ and then ‘ruler’. Anarchist society is one ‘without rulers’: a classless, non-hierarchical society.

    Alright, as promised, here is my initial sketchpad work. Going with a lion meets alligator meets boar for the adult, alligator meets furby meets Gizmo the Gremlin for the baby. Mother will be circling her cute babies in a protective/defensive posture, since I figured most animals in our world are the most viscous when their children are under threat.

    This one will be my composition as well. Will import into painter and rip it up!

    Babies:

    the babies will have very curly golden hair all over, and be very fluffy.

    @lkjhgfdsa:
    interesting beastie. Loving the arm anatomy! One comment might be that the scale could be off, if those are men's bodies down below. A creature with body/muscles of that size would need some massive lift power to get off of the ground. Also, is he primarily a flyer or a runner? Imo, his arm muscles say runner, since they're so developed. If he's a flyer, you could develop his shoulders and pecs more, and maybe minimize the other limbs/body parts.

    @heimdayel:
    the brief says he should be viscous as an adult. I might try to make your beast read better in that regard - maybe facial expression?

    also as a general comment, the brief mentions the infant/baby should be extremely beautiful. IMO, I think that most of us need to up the pretty factor on the babies, but I could be totally off. How pretty are we talking, Si_Swe? I plan on making mine goldilocks-ish.

    concept a and b ideas for the young creature

    So here are two concepts I have for the young version of the creature.
    I have ideas for the older vicious versions of these creatures but I wanted to get some feedback on which of these people liked before I did the older versions.
    Thoughts?
    Thanks,
    Dan

    @Dan Schallock:
    I think critter B is more beautiful. What is on it's back? Bioluminescent or just defensive calluses? But it might be harder to turn him into a predator - don't often see that kind of equine anatomy on carnivores - which in turn might make him all the more interesting! Looking forward to watching him grow up!

    First Cow

    Just found out about cow last week, I started to work on an siberian legacy entry but the next day there was the poll allready^^Luckily this time I have to weeks instead of one day .
    So I tried starting with the cutie versions which din´t work for me at all. So I decided to go for the adult monstrosity at first. Its gonna be some kind of gorilla-T-rex doggy which will get more gecko like features in the pre-mature version.
