One thing I remember reading/seeing about environments is that when you have a path like a river or in your case stairs, that you shouldn't block the entrance like with that rock. I think the reasoning was that it mentally 'blocks' your viewer from traveling through the piece. Haha or something like that

And try to vary your shapes more, most of the them in that environment are straight vertical spikes! It definitely adds to the sinister nature but it would be good to get some more variety.

Nice to see you working! One thing you've gotta work on is your composition I think. Your focal points are landing in kinda weird places. Thing about rule of thirds and different shape comps. Examples: The bannerman piece the castle feels too far to the right. The most recent one, the entrance is practically splitting the piece down the middle. Gotta use elements of the environment to direct the eye to where you want it to go. Keep it up

wow - thank you so much for your encouragement and advice. I`ll keep it up.
Your studies and progress is impressive - it inspires me to draw and paint more.
What I admire is your controll over forms and shapes - your landscapes look so vivid. Like a bluesgitarist who improvises a great solo. keep it up man!

Looking really great Sean, your figure studies are really really coming on. You've got the sheen and the texture down. Your direct studies are nearly photos- they are fantastic. When you then switch to "from imagination" face studies, the proportions go a tiny bit out, but the rest of it is perfect.

You would do well to keep grinding those faces and make sure you keep up the work on the geometry and positioning.

What might be a neat idea to help you:
    1. Do a face study
    2. Do the same face study but without the reference
    3. Examine the differences
    4. ???
    5. Profit!

    Hey there lad!

Thanks for the visit, and yes you were absolutely right about the eyes/nose aspect ratio. I'm struggling with that from the very beginning.

Great sketchbook you've got here yourself, feels loose and painterly and that's what i like.

So last couple days have really sucked for art. Today I did this to try and practice some clouds, theyre kind of lame but clouds are cool and good practice for rendering and form so I think i'll be doing some cloud studies and whatnot. Kbye

CKlamb - Thanks a lot man, always happy that people see improvement, it can be hard to see it myself as we are sometimes too involved in our own work to see it, thanks

Koto - Thanks very much man Thats funny cause those are both things I'm trying to get "good".

    ART:
So the past week ive been doing a lot of thinking and reading on art, trying to get more mature about painting, brushwork and painting "smart". I'm experimenting with some stuff just now and really trying to up the level of form I create in the subjects of a piece I feel everything is much too flat when rendered past basic forms. So thats what will be coming up, clouds with form.
Here is a sketch page of trees n stuff from life and a study from today where I realise I overcomplicate everything in my imaginative work, sometimes forms are just simple. So that was a good lesson. I do have other stuff but not worth postingz

JoeS - Thanks so much man really appreciate

Klaustrophil - Too kind man thanks for stopping by again

SamC - Thanks man I tried to be a bit more disciplined with that study

    ART:
So ive been working on clouds and having a lottt of frustration with them but I think i started to get somewhere today. Here is a study of a cloud I did a while back but re done with a focus on form. Second is imaginative landscape with a larger attention to the clouds, a bunch of crappy imaginative cloud landscapes I wont bother posting as this is the current result of my cloud practice, its been good for my rendering too.
Lastly is something quite unusual to me which is sci-fi mecha suit thing. Something about it doesnt look right, the material doesnt read right but I dont know why, if anyone has any ideas id be happy to hear. I have some sketches i'll scan in soon too.

Sean thanks a lot man, ive been unsure of my progress with pencil lately but im glad you see some.

    ART:
A sketch from yesterdays livestream and a study from today, 95% done with hard round, happier with how I render past couple days, feels much more like painting instead of soft round palooza.

The scale in that second environment looks a bit weird. The two figures don't seem to line up very well and imo the figure in the background actually makes the piece weaker. And just to reiterate, more shape variation in your mountains and rocks! Don't just use spiky sharp vertical mountains, add in some more horizontal ones and the vertical ones as a result will have more of an impact.

Are you painting on paper? If you have the time try finding some cardboard (from boxes or anything) and put a couple of layers of acrylic gesso over it, and it should make your painting experience much better. Keep painting (especially from life)! Painting traditionally is awesome for improving

Aand for the self portrait, your neck looks a little long and the colors seem a kind of desaturated, but that's just nitpicking. outside of that it looks good

Great works my friend! You've got a good grasp on lighting and color. What you could improve on is the structure in your drawings. Try to relate everything you draw and paint to simple geometric forms. This will give a sense of mass and weight to your drawings and even more when you apply those amazing painting skills on top of them. Keep it up!
