    Athenaeum Updates

    http://www.the-athenaeum.org/art/cou...ist_recent.php

For those interested, the athenaeum.org is an online art image library that regularly (irregularly) updates their archive. They may go nine months without an update and then, usually in the fall, they'll upload hundreds of new images in a matter of days.

If you click the link above, you'll see every picture they've uploaded in the last 7 days. This changes every day as time passes, so if you're like me, and you want to save them to your computer, you have to act fast.

Last night, they uploaded about 100 William Merritt Chase portraits, and some Sorollas -they've been adding to these two artists for about a month now.

I'll post updates anytime they put out a good update. I used to do this on Facebook, but none of the people I know really seemed to care.

Oh, one note. Every once in awhile, you'll come across an image that they fear is under copyright. So they only allow you to see the thumbnail. This may be some technical error on their part, because the art is almost always at least a century old (at any rate it always seems random). If you just change the word from 'detail' to 'full' in the address bar, you can see the large version.

Another sixty or so works by Charles Russell - I just looked up his bio. It's a good read:

The atheneum's just uploaded about a hundred new works in the last two days, and is still uploading more as I write this.

It's an assortment of many different American artists, running through names alphabetically, all artists active around 1900 - I'd call it a mix of impressionism/romanticism. They're all high quality works, some are stellar.

There are a couple Sargents in there, and a really great Hale. Also the Bacher, the Barnard, and the Dawson-Watson are all worth saving. Looks like we're in for a great season of art updates this month.

Whoa, they just uploaded about 50 works by Henry Ossawa Tanner. You gotta see these! You know Turner as the painter of the Banjo Lesson, which all the school books use. The athenaeum's posted his religious illustrations. Just look at this, the raising of Lazerus:

A few updates. They had about fifteen by John Chambers - early American seascape painter - painted ship portraits and such. Funky style, some of the sunsets were crazy.

Latest update is a mix/match, but there's a really good Rockwell Kent, and some other nice additions. The Glackens is nice how he painted the trees.

Some really good updates today - I recommend all of them, especially the Eastman Johnson. If you like Winslow Homer, you'll love him.

New Update today, it's all women impressionists, and they're all great! My fav is the first one by Cassatt. There's also some Morisot, and a really good painter I'd never heard of before: Marie Bracqemond.

It's been awhile. First from yesterday there are about 70 new paintings by French impressionist Paul Signac.

If you scroll past that, they added some great new American impressionist/romantic works. There's an Inness, a Chase, a Cassatt study, and a whole bunch of other great updates - all the greats.

Another great update! So for the last few days, the Athenaeum's been uploading images by Charles Conder - they're starting an Australian theme. I didn't mention it because I only liked his earlier works - very sensitive treatment of brushstrokes. His later works got really sloppy - a couple would qualify as examples of Stapleton Kearns' dumb design ideas.

But today they're starting on Frederick McCubbin, and he's phenomenal! Definitely worth a check, and so is Tom Roberts. They're both great.

Finally, another update! More Australian painters and they don't disappoint. Check it out! There are some Sir Arthur Streeton pieces you have to see, like this one:

Another update today focusing on American Impressionist Lilly Cabot Perry, who traveled to Giverny and Japan to paint. There are about 30 works by her, including some nice portraits.

Before that, there's a list of woodland scenes, mostly around the Adirondacks, with works by Winslow Homer, Remington, Kensett, Bricher, and a great landscape by Homer Dodge Martin that I think steals the show.

New updates today, again, mostly American artists, starting with Hudson River masters like Bierstadt and Kensett, then posting a good Inness, a striking Rockwell Kent, and a nicely detailed Hopper seascape. There are some Hassam's, a Bellows, and finishing with some more great works by Australian McCubbin.

The last few updates have gone indepth with two Australian artists, McCubbin, and Tom Roberts. McCubbin's moved more towards impressionism from previous entries - less detail. The Tom Roberts is as great for the history it shows of Australia as for the art. The portraits are great, a bit of a Whistler vibe. They're both worth checking out!

Alright, I've been a bit lazy lately, but there've been some big updates this week. It's almost all American masters, some early/folk art, but mostly the greats. There's Remington, Homer, Chase, and a host of others, ranging from portraits and still lifes to (predominantly) landscapes. There's a forest scene by Whittredge that floored me. There's also an Inness sunset with a monk that's a must-see.

    Recent updates... let's see.

Well, there was another day of American masters, and then just yesterday they uploaded a whole bunch of American/Canadian women artists - lots of obscure names, and really good art. McNicolls was really good, great colors and brushstrokes.

After an inactive week or so, the athenaeum's back, this time focusing almost entirely on van Rysselberghe, a Belgian painter somewhere between romantic/realist impressionism and pointillism. There are over 100 pics. They're uneven, but some are pretty nice.

So I've neglected this. the atheneaeum screwed up their own website with some update - automatic updates didn't work for over a week, then it did. All of a sudden I had five days worth of art to save before it all disappeared. The biggest highlight was Chardin, if you go to his personal file, there are tons more still lifes now. There were also lots of American works - impressionists and earlier.

Here's why I'm posting. Anyone ever hear of Reginald Machell? Well, take a look at this:

The athenaeum's been busy, for awhile now. Biggest updates: They just posted a ton of Gerome paintings. That and a bunch of new Tanners. Oh, and some great Rossetti drawings.

Okay, so last Feb my son broke my computer in a fit of rage, and I lost all the art that I've been posting about here. Last time I backed up files was last summer. Three months later I finally got most of it back. In the meantime, the Athenaeum's been working full steam with about 900 new artworks a week... I'm finally caught up on it, so let me say what you've missed.

First of all, they've posted hundreds of Sargent studies, mostly watercolor but some oils too. The best way to see it all is under his profile, with the art listed by upload date in descending order: http://www.the-athenaeum.org/art/lis...ud&m=a&aid=368

They also posted a ton of Klimt: http://www.the-athenaeum.org/art/lis...ud&m=a&aid=172

Bonnard, which I'm not as fond of somehow. I feel like all the works I remember liking just aren't on the net anymore. I think Mark Harden's Artchive used to have a great selection, but they were deleted.: http://www.the-athenaeum.org/art/lis...ud&m=a&aid=449

Giacommetti, very inventive, I like this guy more and more with each new painting: http://www.the-athenaeum.org/art/lis...ud&m=a&aid=410

They've been adding some Streeton and McCubbin's again which you can still see on the recent updates page, also some great new Paxton's.

The last thing I downloaded before losing my last computer was a bunch of new William Wendt's - California impressionist with great, vibrant colors: http://www.the-athenaeum.org/art/lis...d&m=a&aid=1785

Oh, there are a bunch of Romney portraits too. Some are high rez with lots of detail, some are blurry and pixellated: http://www.the-athenaeum.org/art/lis...d&m=a&aid=1196
