    Exclamation faculty crit

hey guys, whomever reads this give me feedback.

I recently had my formal critique with an entire staff and had mentioned artists i look at, ashley wood, rick berry, phile hale and a bunch of others. I also mentioned rubens, freud, nerdrum and none of them new anyone past rubens. They said i was looking at the wrong people and are probably hindering my work. listed off the library of refs i have (spectrums, sparrows, the internet [duh]), but if they don't know who these artists are how can they judge my work? SO i will ask you guys, "What should i do?" many of them say to reduce, simplify, and deconstruct the images to bare minimum detail. others say to render render render. I need to restore my faith here a bit and am hoping you guys can tell me my work sucks and I need to start getting serious. I know my value patterns need work, my lightest lights and darkest darks are not that present. I am using direct observation and am trying to remain as loose as possible with my quick gestures. let me know...

Nice. They have a good 'energy' about them again (pushes glasses up nose, trying to sound 'proper' arty). Good skills.

    quick studio studies

I have been doing quick portraits of people around the studio and myself. i find it a nice warm up before actually getting into my paintings. i do them on cardboard or any other "un-precisous" material. This allows me to makes mistakes and just be loose.

Hey dude, pretty lame what the staff told you I don't think there feedback really was to useful for you. Then again i don't know if mines of any use ^_^''

I suggest just looking at the artists you admire, think about what basic foundations they have down better then you and then find a way to work on those basic things.

Just look for what your work needs that it does not have right now, just look for what you feel you need to push for right now to get to that next level.

thanks Alex, i appreciate it. i've battled staff enough to know how to turn things in my favor, it is still just upsetting that they still believe its the 1970s. of course i am going to look at ashley wood or phile hale while paying respects to the forerunners. thanks dude
