How strict is the admission decision?

Could I be denied entrance because my portfolio lacks fantasy drawings or digital art?

The short answer is no, but it would probably be a good idea to have something like that in there.

I'm not an expert on their admissions, but I can certainly say that the people in charge value quality, thought process, understanding of composition, light, form, perspective... that kind of thing. None of these require fantasy or digital! That said, I'll imagine you'll want to show some stuff that demonstrates some kind of originality, even if it isn't in subject matter. Even a couple well-composed abstracts that prove good knowledge of foundations wouldn't hurt.

But if you're hoping to major in entertainment design and (possibly) illustration, you'll probably want to demonstrate using your imagination with subject matter.

from what i notice schools differ. in general a portfolio should not just show your savvy technique-wise. Mostly you will want a portfolio that will show your ability to excel in the work you will be doing in school. Remember school is where you learn so its not so important to "know things" rather, the schools like to see that your have drive outside of the classroom. They will usually want to see that you have creative vision and goals with your art. Its probably much easier for someone who has extremely refined technique, but whats most important is drive, a good eye, and obvious desire to practice.

school CANNOT teach motivation, discipline, and work ethic.
so gear your portfolio in a way that makes an argument that you will be a good student...

i know there are lots of talented kids in school who (IMO) shouldnt be in school because even though they have good "natural talent" they do shit with it and never devlope into anything. But i can assure you there are plenty of kids who you will see in school and wonder how they got in... but its those kids who have a passion and even if their technical skill isnt always there they have other (more valuable things) to offer that will increase the effectiveness of their education.

i could be wrong, this is just how i look at things. Best thing to do is to skip the admissions reps and actually email or schedule a preliminary interview with the dean or chair of your intended department. i started getting in contact about a year before i even applied. and i knew the dean on a first name bases. the dean or a department leader is your best bet if you want to assure your acceptance. Just dont allow yourself to be another anonymous NAME on a BIG list of applicants. This is a mistake i believe. Give a face to the name, and create a dialogue...
