Oh, great topic!
I'm a bit light on jungle references, can anyone recommend a good source?
I guess watching Predator would also be good :-)
Any episode of Man vs Wild.
sounds like fun![]()

Interesting round! This will be my first entry so I intend to do it right.
Some movie ref:
- Tears of the Sun
- The Beach
- The Ruins
Vulgar you absolutely win for the Jedi Mind Tricks album cover pic. You sir, are officially a rockstar,![]()
Predator re-watch is mandatory for this one.
Jungle refs are pretty easy to find. Pbase is great:

Ha! That's exactly what I first thought of.
Anyway, heres some FARC pics I found that might help.

You guys rock! thanks for all the links / tips for jungle ref.
I'm going to force myself to do this one since I haven't done much in terms of plant life / greenery.
Cool topic! Yeah, totally got me thinking 'bout how cool last years Predators movie was and the first Crysis game and Farcry 2
so here's some quick explorations from me.Not sure 'bout these. Just thinking i should try to push the perspective further.

Streetz Thanks man. Was thinking bout what you said and how to go about it, I think my new wip helps clarify the guerilla nest as the focal point. Was considering some other options but this seems to work best for me.
Still lots to do. Lots more details to add and got to the make the camp more interesting, but i need to start using more references at this point. So far I haven't been using any photo textures or matte techniques or even a grid but i think the 3pt comes off alright due to the natural surroundings (would prob look funky on something structural).

So where's everyone at? I can't be the only one in this jungle. Don't think i don't know what you're all up to... hiding in the foliage planning to ambush me with AWESOME.
@blankstate: Might be a nice touch to add in some combat. Possibly with a guy on a turret firing at the ground.
Gonna work on mine hopefully within a day or two.
Blankstate Off to a good start I see. I agree with +oas+ ; Adding some combat would be cool. Makes me think of the aerial attack during the movie Apocalypse Now.
I drew up a quick thumbnail yesterday. The idea so far is a view upon the edge of a rebel camp hidden in fog, somewhere during the quiet hours of the morning.
Boring composition as of yet. I'll do some more thumbs on this one.
Loose sketching. I settled on the idea of a base in a plane wreck. Having trouble with composition though. Don't know if I made the right choise with my thumbnail. Looks really boring atm.
Nice sketch ismo. I was thinking in the line of being seated inside the nest covered with those "Ray Mears" kinda rainsheets...filled with hammocks, ammunition...the regular guerilla stuff.....outside some jungle motivs.
ismo- I like the idea of the plane a lot so would stick with that but you are right about the composition being a bit boring right now. Your focals seem quite central so maybe follow the rule of Thirds and get them moved off the same line? Maybe add a snapped off tail of the plane in the background? Not sure but you normally have very nice work so I am sure you will fix it. Good luck.
If I have time I will participate, I need jungle painting experience for sure!

@Uro: the image on the bottom left has a nice composition, if I were you, I'd use that one to start on. Throw a sniper in that tower.
Nice starts!
Mila Thanx! Can't believe i've never watched that movie before, but i have played Mercenaries 1&2. I like the idea of yours, keep doing thumbs and find one you like.
ismo I don't think it looks boring at all. Maybe keep the foreground to the far left a little lower so you can see more of the trees in the distance or get rid of the tree to the far right and show more plane so as not to 'box in' or 'picture frame' your composition. Doesn't seem very natural to me. Would like to see it developed further, you do great work.
ThomD Interesting comp. and colors. The green seems maybe a bit over saturated but is a nice color choice.
Urötskidoji +1 vote for no.3
Thanks for the suggestions and feedback. Commencing with combat!
Q Why do so many enemies in video game bases leave explosive red barrels of fuel just lying around next to pivotal base structures? Are they really that stupid?
A Stop thinking about it. Blowing up stuff is fun!
Interesting round again.
@ ismo: I like the mood and color composition, its a strong start already.
@ blankstate: I like your first sketch better. I think it has better balance of foreground/background scale and can add much more to depth the this one u chose.
Im definitely going to participate. This is my first sketch.
Just a quick question, can we do something more fantastical/something that wouldn't be possible in real life? like a nest on platforms up in the trees or a literal type of "nest" like a bugs nest?
jonafunart - Yeah that's fine.

Well I have a wip but... it's not in a jungle... The guerillas took up residence in a giant termite nest, so technically there's a jungle outside you just can't see it haha it's fine if I'm not allowed to enter with this though.
I hope i can finish this piece. kinda generic scene for practice. welcome c&c. help me improve
