On your more finished pieces you're missing that sense of reality you only get from studying life - and that doesn't mean a photo of an apple - get a real apple and plonk it down next to your computer. It seems i don't even look at what i'm painting... i just take a glance and draw from my head... >.<

OH and i did not paint this from a photo ref, not any of the photos above... i think photo ref may have been easier. i think i'm better with those. especially when i grid the ref... but idk how other artists feel about gridding... it's all just about learning

Anyway, good new work man, the loomis studies are looking good keep them up, and the apple isn't bad either, next time try putting it on something dark, or something, it's always easier to bring out the colours when it's balanced with a dark background.

so guys... my laptop was in my backpack which fell off a hook like 4 feet... the edge is cracked but the screen is in tact and I'm using it right now, so no functional problems so far... Also been really lazy and busy lately... mostly lazy. Told my self I'd start up digital work again when Wacom's new driver for the Intuos4 comes out. Last one was August 7th. For no particular reason either just a non controlled date of mine and I'd also be able to re-install the tablet I was having trouble with the right clicking before...

anyways, anyone have something similar happen with their laptop? could use some advice.

Hey Shahan, looking through your sketchbook I am really impressed. Your characters are really dynamic, and you have a great sense of 3D form! I do think Black Spot was very right about drawing from life being a path of growth for you. I can see a contrast in how you handled painting the apple, compared to the dynamism and confidence of your figure drawing from imagination. Try to bridge the divide between these two parts of your brain! I think you will notice over time, as Black Spot said, a great difference in how grounded and real your drawings will appear. Also, the things you see in real life will start affecting your drawings from imagination to a much greater degree.

Anyway, all the best and I look forward to seeing you reach your next plateau!

great focus in here! i would stay keep pushing yourself with the drawing basics and really build that visual vocabulary by focusing on observational drawing. in the character designs tuff, try to think about the silhouette and creating distinct shapes that differentiate the simplest forms.
