I keep using this image to show people about lines of action:



Because it gets the idea across so well. Plot down the main movement of your characters in a single line first, and position the ligaments of your character according to that, it can help make your work a lot more 'fluid' and the stances a lot less rigid.

I just bought a book that teaches you how to draw manga hair. I'm going to be having some fun this weekend. Moreover, is there anything else you think I should be studying?

It might be nice to see some more anatomical studies, either from real life or from some anatomy books.

Animation books, like the one featuring the Tom and Jerry character sheet, are also a good source of knowledge.

I just bought a book that teaches you how to draw manga hair.

I'd rather spend couple bucks buying the newest hairstyle magazines and start drawing from those. "How to draw manga" books in general have high chance of being bad quality (the only ones worth bothering are mainly the originals that are done in Japan by actual manga artists, and even they can vary a lot with quality) and nothing's stopping you from stylizing real hair. Also movies are good for seeing hair-do in action and from different angles. Also sitting down in front of two mirrors and drawing your own hair is highly recommended (unless you're bald). Because you definitely need more drawing from real things.

Could you name some examples? I don't think I've ever come across instructional stuff from actual manga artists - would be interesting to see! ('course, I'm assuming these are done by very famous manga artists when that may not be the case).

Hmm, I may have been partly mistaken as I'm pretty sure that at least some of the artists in the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/How_to_Draw_Manga series are actual professionals but they really don't seem to be putting the names out so I can't verify that (but considering the market for manga is really huge in Japan but not so much gets outside it, it's likely that the artists are actual mangakas but ones we haven't heard about), BUUUUUT this: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/ency...nga.php?id=976 (The Apprentice Mangaka) I can guarantee is from an author you've heard, Akira Toriyama. Though ironically that's actually the one that concentrates more on drawing actual manga, not just on how to draw stuff and effects like the other series (if I remember right, I read it years ago). I do recommend reading it if you can find in some language you understand.

Below is a character I've been working on for a few weeks. His name is doctor depressed eye and he's the second 3d model I've made so far. I'm hoping to have a collection of my own original models by the end of this year.

Anyway, when it comes to my drawing I'm just studying anatomy and folds. Other than that I am going to be posting some album covers I'm making in a few months.







What do you guys think of the Doc?

I would make Dr. Depressed Eye look sad. Either bring his entire upper eyelid down, or til both sides of his upper eyelid downwards, as if they were eyebrows. For a guy who's actually named Depressed, he doesn't look very depressed.

I know the coloring looks bad but I'm going to work harder so my next pieces look close to perfect. If I wasn't trying to make my art look perfect then what would be the point of practicing drawing in the first place?
