    Hey Darkwater!

I really like what you're posting here. That is some great draftmanship.
Your compositions are well done and your values work extremely well.
If I had but one crit, I'd say that your rendering makes some of the work appear stiff and motionless, even if it's motion you were trying to capture. You can get away from that by using more linevariation, break up lines where you'd assume higlights, get looser in the background but render the foreground more. This should really bring some fresh air into your pieces. I guess you're working from refs a lot, huh? Maybe getting away from that would push your storytelling and compositions even further.

    Thanks for the art!

    Cheers
    Marko

P.S: Always remember, less is more

The Darklighter series ruled Mr. Wheatley. Being a big fan of the Star Wars comics I am glad to see you post your work here. The amount of detail in your work is amazing. Can't waitto see more.

These look great. I'd have to agree that they're a little stiff in places, but I can relate because it's a problem I often have in my own work.

Really love all the rich details, lots for the eye to play with. Please, keep posting.

    Hi Marko,
Thanks for the crit! Yep, I have no choice in the matter with regards to reference because of the license. The characters should look like the characters from the Movies. Since I've been working on the Star Wars stuff, my drawing has stiffened somewhat. So I have enrolled in some life drawing classes to refresh and "loosen" up.
I agree with you concerning line weight and how the detail does not help me out with regards to the composition, movement, and storytelling. I'm working on these problems and hopefully my current work will show improvement. I'm letting go of the drawing and letting the colorist assume more responsibility for tone and value with some direction in the line.

    Thanks man!

    Montross,
Thanks dude, unfortunately the next book will be out I believe in May 2005 just before the last movie, so it's going to be awhile before anyone sees any of my current work because of the nondisclosure agreement with LucasFilm. So I thought I would come hear to this big studio on the web and jam with you guys!

    Titan, liquidwerx,
Thanks! I am what some people call a "nuts and bolts" kinda artist in practice, and so I have to concern myself more with what I'm trying to say rather than what I "want" to draw. I have to think smarter when approaching detail vs. the overall picture. I think my next project will still have the detail I have been known for, and hopefully more punch and less "stiffness"

    Thanks guys!

Awesome work. Reminds me of an artist that used to draw Wonder Woman covers? Brian Bolland? I dunno. Anyway, really nice stuff.

Super awesome stuff, man. I am especially impressed with your ability to render an over-grown jungle.... this is something I need work on....

I almost do not want to see how they will look after being inked.... it is always a shame to see how much depth is lost when the flat black inks are added... oh well.

My only crit: your character's eyes all look very similar and tend to have the same squinty-ness to them. Also, the head on the guy who is jumping over the table and grabbing the other guy seems a little big, but I imagine that isn't something that could be changed very easily at this point, but it also isn't a big deal either.

Nicely done, very professional, amazing attention to detail.

Some fantastic drawing and composition, I really appreciate your patience and hard work. I've found working with refrence is a two way street on one hand its cool to see what your drawing but the draw back is your own creative ideas are a little repressed by the limitations the clients put on the work.

Its hard to crit such works, you can only appreciate the incredible discipline and skill it takes to do it, my hats off to you my friend.

I love the line quality on this piece and many others. I wish there were some close up shots.

Beware. This work is too good for photobucket. Your bandwith will probably be used up in no time.

Thank you all, for your crits and complements, I appreciate them all and I have learned much. Unfortunately I'm running out of bandwidth and so the images won't be available much longer. I don't have a web site up yet, and probably won't have one up soon since I am booked solid until December, no days off. I hope to post again next month or if I can work something out, I will be up a running again sooner than that. Anyway, thanks again!

YEH, these are ahh ok...hehe jk Love these man. Very cool stuff. How long does it usually take to get a full page done? A more complex one anyway, like the X-Wing hangar? And do you ink as well as the pencil?

Thanks Presence, have one for me!

    Hey Darkstream,
I ink my personal work. These are cleaned up and adjusted using Image/Adjustment/ "levels" in PS to darken and strengthen the line so it can print like it was inked. Then they are colored and printed using my pencil line.

Most of my pages seen here took one day; sometimes I require a day and a half.

I love your color work by the way!

The book is out in North America and has been for some time. I believe the trade paperback comes out internationally with in the next month or so.

    Rocking!
I would like to know what kind of paper and pens you use? And how big are the original pages - 200% or more?
You wouldnt be inspired by Brian Bolland by any chance?

    Keep up the great work

Yeh i wondered if that was what you were doing or not. What kind of pencil do you use for that? My lines never seem that clean to just go with them. I scribble around too much. That and when you make the sky black finally, how do you keep the rest of the pic from changing?

I only hope the colorist and what not can do it justice.
