    jonafunart's sketchbook, critique wanted (NSFW)

    Hello, I've been a lurker for some time but I thought now would be a good time to register and make my own sketchbook, I'd also like to take part in some of the "of the week" competitions. I desperately want to improve, my knowledge of anatomy isn't great and my posing is even worse so critique is VERY welcome!

    Edited so I can change the thread thumbnail.

    I stumbled upon this website in the references and inspiration section http://www.posemaniacs.com/ it seems like a really useful tool for gesture drawing. It shows you a pose and you have 30 seconds to draw it, it then changes to another random pose. You can set it to give you a bit more time, which I might do next time because it's hard to get the full figure down in 30 seconds. I can imagine doing something like this every day would really help me improve, I'd burn through sketchbooks fast though anyway here's all of the ones I did in 30 minutes:

    I did update this days ago but it said that I needed approval, it still hasn't gone through so I'll try again.. First off is some gesture sketches that I did, 30 seconds per gesture. I had a bit of trouble getting it down in such a small amount of time but it was fun, felt like I learnt something and I only did it for 30 minutes. Next is a study from a photograph and the last one is something I just finished 2 minutes ago, I wanted something to test chromatic aberration on.

    Nice start jonafunart! I liked your EOW for the horned temple, nice choice of angle. I would suggest trying to differentiate your environments more into a foreground, mid ground and background. There are various ways to do this, including overlapping elements (e.g. things in the foreground for example blocking out things in the midground), repeating elements with scale (e.g. things getting smaller into the distance) and value (things lose contrast as they recede into the distance due to the light diffusing as it hits air molecules).

    As the other poster mentioned, definitely focus in on perspective studies as much as you can, this is really at the core of everything.

    Keep at it, it will be great! Good luck!

    Dude your art is great - I love the lighting effects you got in the top environments. As said earlier your perspective could use some work but overall you have a great grasp that I am trying to get ahold of better myself...

    I love the 30" gestures you did and it always is a great warmup and just practice.

    I feel like your composition and enviroment works are your forte IMO, your anatomical work is great but if you spend a bit more on that it will greatly impact you.

    This link is an invaluable resource that any and all artists should use regardless of level or refreshing:

    Helped me a bunch after only a week of seeing it, hope you BM it!

    Cheers!

    @ErikR well here's more!

    @skullkid thanks a lot man

    @spitboi7 thanks a lot, especially for that link, that'll come in really handy

    So I haven't been updating this sketchbook because I've been busy studying every day. I just wanted to get on with it and not worry about uploading the stuff here, although I have been putting it on my blog but only one person reads that! I'll upload more as I do it from now on. My ambition is to be a freelance artist and I've realised I have to start studying seriously for that to ever happen. Watching Dave Rapoza and Noah Bradley's livestreams have been a huge inspiration, both in their style and how they make me want to study to get that good. I'll upload the stuff in the order it was done over a few posts because I have 33 images to upload...

    I have tons more Bridgman stuff but I can't be bothered scanning all the pages, it was all done in a little A5 sketchbook lol... I've also been doing 1 minute gesture sketches from posemaniacs every day, have a few sketchbooks of them now but don't see the point of scanning those and uploading them here :p

    hey man, thanks for dropping by my sketchbook! your doing all the right things so far, doing studies, working on anatomy, studying digital and traditional, and doing imaginative work too. thats always the best recipe for success. always excercise each part of your brain, just remember that the longer you work on a study or a painting, the more you will force your mind to see whats wrong with it, or how it can be improved. it can be tough, but it will help you to remember past mistakes, and help you become faster in the long run. so just keep doing what your doing, working hard!

    hey man your doing great, keep it up with the studies, its the fastest way to improve. The latest enviro is great, you kept a cold palette and it works very well with the shapes, we can feel the cold ! You will improve fast at this rate, keep in mind that you will reach your goals, its just a matter of time and hardwork. No specific crits, just give all you got to each of your drawing ;P
    cheers
