    Bammes is now available!

Gottfried Bammes, author of the incredibly popular Die Gestalt Des Menschen, now has the Complete Guide to Life Drawing available in English.

I just got my copy this morning.

I don't own a copy of the original German book so I can't say how they compare, but I must say that based on my first skimming of this book it looks extremely good. A lot of excellent construction techniques for drawing the figure.

Oh sweet! Can you post more pictures and say a bit more about it? I have heard his books vary a lot in terms of quality--you get something amazing in one, then another book is filled mostly with student's drawings. Is this actually worth picking up? How would you say it compares to other anatomy books like those by Bridgman?

    Such a coincidence!

And we'll have his "Drawing Animals" (Tiere zeichnen) coming up this week.
It's in Russian, but the most of this book is all about visuals.

Sorry if I interfere with your posts about the English edition of his "Menschen zeichnen", but his "Drawing Animals" wasn't available for a long time either, so I wanted to let you know about this new edition as well.

And, just a reminder, we also have his "Bible", which is "Die Gestalt Des Menschen", printed this May. Also in Russian.

That drawing animals book looks really good, any chance of it being printed in english?

    rem92,

As I've mentioned earlier, there is "some" English publisher who's purchased the English rights for all 4 Bammes books. We've been sending inquires but they can't tell us the name yet. I'll try to find out when I'm at the Frankfurt Book Fair.

The worst is if they only wanted to make an investment. In such case you won't see these books published in English too soon.

I'll let you know if I get the information.

What the hell? Just 25$? The original german book is expensive as hell. I actually intended to buy it but the high price was holding me off. Thanks. Gonna get it now!

    Hmmm...

    German version : 473 pages
    English version : 312 pages

So what gives? I heard that Bammes is pretty wordy in German, but would that account for a 160 page difference?

Yeah I really wish I had the original so I could compare.

But regardless, this is an exhaustive and well done anatomy book. And not terribly expensive, either.

This book is probably not "Die Gestalt des Menschen" but "Wir zeichnen den Menschen" or " Menschen zeichnen" instead.

@Noah : 25 bucks is a great price considering how much you have to pay for the originals.

How come you already own it when the release date says Oktober 1st? Are you.... an insider?

Edit: Yeah, you''re right Vapour. Menschen zeichnen is 312 pages, makes sense now. Anyone know how much different "Menschen zeichnen" and "Die Gestalt des Menschen" are? I only have the second one.

People on a tight budget take note -- I was looking to see if this book was available on eBay and found that someone is selling a brand new copy of Complete Guide to Life Drawing by Bammes for $3.98! Even with the cost of shipping at $3.99, that's still under $8 total -- a bargain or what?! Unfortunately, I don't live in the US, otherwise I would have snapped it up myself.

Ok, got the book last night.

First impressions is that this is a very thick book and it's definitely full of info.

I'd take pictures, but it hits one of my issues with this book. The binding/size. This book needs to be a tad wider, because it's more long than wide, it's hard to keep a 300 page book this thick open.

I took these photos for a critique, but because I remember someone asking photos I think these might be appreciated here too, even though they don't give a very extensive look to the book but is a good way to also necro this thread.

I do have to agree with Arshes, the book is pretty inconvenient to keep open. It's somehow stiff, because the even thicker, similarly bound and nearly same sized Bridgman's "Drawing from life" is very easy to keep open because it's more floppy.

I especially love the clearly stated exercises, and they also should help those who buy books and then wonder "what should I do with this", though I wish I had a model life drawing course so I could actually do some of the exercises...
