Thomas M. Sketchbook - Alla Primal

Update: Hey my names Thomas Mahon, I'm from London UK, I'm 18 and just about to leave school. Instead of going to a university or something to get an art degree I've decided to take the completely self taught route, so I'll be studying every day for 2 years, going to make a timetable soon and start testing it out. Since I've started this thread I feel i've made some big improvement, and I thank the Crimson Daggers community for pushing me to improve.

my older stuff can be viewed here: www.mahons.deviantart.com incase you're interested. This thread will be a progress from now to infinite.

Great stuff so far! I would very much like to see you replace the axe in the first picture with a lute. That would be hilarious to me.

With this I tried to do it as fast as possible. I think if I spend too long on a painting it becomes stale and boring to me.

I'm having a little bit of trouble with the legs, and the design of the animals head, I'm going to play around with it a little bit more. Work in progress ofcourse.

I looked at a picture of a boxer and tried to reproduce it. It went pretty badly, I got frustrated and gave up. I'll try again with a new boxer tomorow.

I really like that last pic in the first post, but the elbow mechanism seems kind of awkward when it comes to joint movement.

Yeah I agreee it's very awkward, wasn't really paying attention to functionality. In the future I'll do more preparation

I think you have a good eye for for shapes and form, If you were to work some more detail to some of these peices they would epic.

hey, thanks for the compliment, and yeah I do need to spend more time on the detailing, I get fed up with a piece though. I need more patience definatly. I'm using photoshop Cs3 with an intuous3. I'm using a brush pack called 'Shaddy', although I forgot where I got it from.

hey man just one suggestion would be to begin your paints with a concept of the space in mind it will help you build your figures for sure. even just in a room or some other object to reference in the space. The bear paint is working the best as a paint an can tell the concept was flowing with space. looks the most effortless.

Thanks Mike, that's something I was very aware of when I finished the concepts. I just drew a concept and then stuck a background on it, when I drew the bear it was the other way round, I'll take it on board! thanks for the critisism
