Remake of an old character picture.

As part of the meme going around I'm remaking an old picture i drew in my teens. Same composition, new skills.

I'm using a reference picture for the face, but trying to press myself I try to use a light source from the lower right and do it freehand and think about and understand the shapes if the face. I think i might gotten it mostly right by now but would love some feedback on the shading. The skin tones are still of, the highlights to yellow, so any tip about coloring would also be appreciated.

I don't think there's enough contrast for the face to look 3 dimensional.

Also, consider where your light is coming from in a 3 dimensional way. "Lower right" could mean the light source could be behind, in front or at the exactly below her chin.

I can't really guess the light source right now because the light is somehow hitting the lower chin just as strongly as the forehead, but the lower cheeks have little light hitting it.

Consider using lighter lights and darker darks to make it look more 3 dimensional so we know what type of light you're going for.

Thank you for you reply. All helpful advice and I liked the reminder that lower right should be 3d angle, not just lower right, a bit extra.

Hmm... I don't really have a crit for the actual image (at least anything that others couldn't crit better) but I'm slightly saddened that you've changed the original image that much. Since I'm just an outside observer, I can't tell how much of the look of original image was caused by your skill level and what was conscious decision, but everything that I can see in the old pic is lost in your new version.
Like in the old one I see a rough and tough, no-nonsense rural fighter who probably hasn't bathed in months and who's square and strong jaw and large, alert eyes show that he/she is ready to fight to death at any time, but in the new version there's just a generically pretty and bored lady.

So personally I think it might be interesting (and more possibly more challenging) trying to incorporate the things you may have even accidentally drawn to the original to the new version, but of course it's for you to choose.

You absolutely correct. I got so caught up in the damn shadows i forgot the whole point of the picture was. Thank you for you feedback.

Here I tried to back to more of the original face shape and expression, and sketched some scars. Even if it mostly sketchy right now. I still have some more work on the likeness, but I'm hope i gotten a bit in the right direction.

Try to make this picture work in black and white grayscale. A lot of your problems are with value, not color; grayscale helps with solving such problems by letting you focus on values without color to confuse you.

Tried some colors, and it turned out nice. A bit metallic but I'll fix that for hand

Thanks. I seen that tutorial before. What feels hard isn't hair in general but backlit slight frizzy hair, in shadow.

Gotcha, well same principles apply you just need to adjust your values accordingly...

I miss her brutishness in the new one, especially because her new hair is elegant and soft; the original version has rebellious curls, or dreadlocks- looking more savage-ish and wild.

This, and the old eye were so much expressive (while being anatomically totally incorrect and kind of dead, but had a presence... I can't find the right words now but I think you understand)...
I think you should forget about soft brushes for quite a while. And I still can't see a nice definite light source.
The two is hard to compare, they are very different. Maybe next time you draw the original brute skillfully
