Nice to see you posting some work
It looks like you certainly know you're way around PS, and you look comfortable in your observations of light/form, etc...
Working from the masters is a wonderful way to get familiar with methods for problem solving through a painting, drawing, whatever. I used to visit museums back in my art school days and we'd emulate/study the works of the greats. I know for me it certainly helped get the confidence up seeing my own drawings evolve, even if at the time they were emulations of paintings.
My advice is that since you seem pretty comfortable with this approach, don't be afraid to work from life, or even reference that's got some drama in the light source. It'll force you to make some choices regarding your values, focal point, even composition. They may not seem as strong as the master emulations at first, but you'll gradually start to translate your knowledge to your own imagery as time goes by. It may sound silly, but there's never any failures with a drawing or painting that may not turn out quite the way you had hoped, the experience will translate to the work down the line.

Hey Mike L., thanks for the comment and the advice. I agree that working from life is a great way to learn. I have been working on some works that are my own... I am still new to illustrations and concept arts in general so still learning about what makes a good illustration and character design. Anyway, here is my newest work.
She is a young queen who had her eyes blinded as part of a ritual for becoming a queen.

That... is a pretty great monkey. So little indication of the fur texture, yet it's still completely obvious. Great use of colour, great subtlety.

I second that, the Naruto fan art looks very good.

The shadow areas of Pikachu looks green rather than yellow. This happens when you change the value without changing the hue/temperature. If you make the shadow more orange-ish, it will not look so green. The colors of the far ear is pretty good.

IMO in this last one the guy's torso is a bit long, but I like the arms and pose.

I like the studies the most, the torso of the guy riding the horse looks a bit stretched, also the hand coming towards the camera should be a bit larger because of the foreshortening.

any tips on lighting?? especially how you went about the lighting in the naruto piece? that shadow under the nose is.. it really .. its inspiring.

Sporus, Thanks. For the naruto piece I used a reference as a guide for how shadow falls on the face. I usually block in big shadow areas and then go back for smaller details while always keeping the shadows and lights distinct.
