    Bias against non-digital work?

I've gotten some really weird responses lately. A horror magazine wanted me to start doing illustrations for them. I asked if they were looking for oil or watercolors. they said, "oh, you don't do digital. Yeah, the last time we didn't use digital, it didn't sell too well". With record covers, I've had more than one label tell the band they need to go with a digital image instead of a painting. The painting dates them.

Don't tell them how you do it. Scan the original and you have a digital painting; send it to them in whatever format they want. Maybe you'll start a trend.

Are they referring to a photo manipulation instead of a photoshop painting? I've had a few people specifically needing album covers tell me they want photo manipulations over a painting for the same dating reason, even though I could probably paint the same image and make it look better.

Pah! What kind of horror mag would not want a real painted horror scene? They should feel lucky to have made contact with you, have these guys never seen VHS horror covers before?

    Maybe it's a time issue?

I've edited the thread title to avoid confusion and make it more descriptive.

I had the opposite experience: I was turned down for a pulp cover because I worked digitally. The editor said he loved receiving covers as paintings, opening the wrapping and having the smell and tangibility present in his hands. Digital just didn't do it for him. It was one of my motivations for wanting to learn oil again.

What happened to you Dan suggests there are plenty of art editors out there who really don't have a bloody clue what they are talking about.

This. Throw in some weird, esoteric symbol brush and you're golden.
