another update! working on perspective tonight but probably won't get around to posting it til tomorrow, but this is from earlier on in the week...taking an art class is definitely motivating me to draw more (:
here is some ink faces that i really liked, i posted the top two already but changed the left one a bit and added two more. also some uglier sketches, and my first try at charcoal...just around 5-10 mins while i was waiting for someone to call me back (:

this is the result of my art class last saturday, we were doing shading w/ pencil (next week is charcoal). i liked it, it was of a little clay statue. The other was also a sculpture but that was just to fill up the rest of the time. and then there's some gold beads, and some other unimportant scribbles.

Hello! Thanks for stopping by my sketchbook. I think you really discovered something in posts 24 and 25, because they are a tremendous step forward. My advice aside from keep doing what you are doing (lol) is to watch your line quality. Your lines are looking a little hairy and they are lacking in confidence. Even if you are not feeling particularly confident about the lines you are putting down (I know how that is) try to get them in one clean stroke. If you miss, try another clean stroke. This method was suggested to me by someone on here, and I think that it really helped me.
My Sketchbook would benefit from your critiques.
Thanks a bunch for takin' a look at my sketchbook. Anyways, you're off to a good start with the exercises. I really like the "sneak a peak" drawing. Those blind contour exercises helped me tons. Your lines are getting more confidence and your facial anatomy is improving. I'd say it's important to draw from imagination because it forces you to use the information you collect when you draw from observation. I'd say draw some still lifes of basic forms like cubes, cylinders, speres and cones (tissue box, cup, baseball and a funnel?). Keep drawing drawing drawing!!! 8)
Hey. Thanks for the comment in my sb.
You're doing the right things at the moment. Nice rendering on that clay statue. The perspective studies look good too. Learning to simplify and construct things is the key so you should draw as much as you can from life. That way you'll learn to feel the form and volume of the object better and not just copy shapes what might happen if you only study with photos.
Keep it up.
damn. i always navigate away from the page with a comment half-written. anyway, thanks very much for stopping by guys. i will definitely try some more still life today and work on improving my line quality and confidence. also, i get in free to the museum of fine arts in boston (whoohoo, student membership deal!) so i should absolutely take advantage of that more often. thanks for your tips & encouragement (:

thanks kerah!
alright, first some old stuff, and then next post will be last night's and today's stuff. the first is skull construction from the "structure of man" videos that were available for free (the first 20 lessons i think, pretty much how to construct the basic skull/head anatomy). that's from a while ago...the other two are more recent, within the last two weeks or so, just scribbles..

some of the stuff i did last night and today. mannequin poses are from a search on flickr...i don't actually have one. -poor-
the ones in blue ink were during class and were from my mind! i think they look ok for not being referenced, and listening to my teacher at the same time, hah...d:

here's what i got done of a still life of a peach last night...before i got hungry and ate the peach. obviously it was not finished, i was having a lot of trouble figuring out how to render it properly.

here are some sketches i did in various galleries at the MFA. the first was a japanese (i think) sculpture and the second and third were from an example of how they cast sculptures. the last one is another sculpture. their eyes are all black cause they were just hollow pretty much. there's so much at the MFA to draw!!
more sketchbook stuff coming in a bit, as well as the charcoal drawings from class yesterday.

a few pages from the moleskine.
the first is from pictures. sorry the picture's a bit blurry, but i liked the bird.
the second is me trying to draw someone from life, but he kept moving and i sketch too slow. and one from imagination

You do awesome faces, especially noses (I always have a problem with noses and I'm pretty jealous of how cool and varied yours are).
Keep going! You make me miss art classes, heh.
Thanks, Kellye! Yeah, being in an art class has been helpful. It's just a beginner's class, so we aren't really focusing on technique. It's more just like - "here's a pencil. try some shading." but it gets me to draw more on my own, which i think is more helpful than the class itself.

Here's my charcoal drawings from last saturday. I found it pretty difficult to work with...I don't love the lack of control and how it gets all over everything. That being said, I sort of like the second one.

hand studies. i hate hands.

I like the sketches of the lighter and the last page of the hand study. The lighter is nice because you're studying the form, and you're making decisions with how you use light, shade and line in order to depict the form. This is good. I like the hand because you're not only studying the anatomical foundation of the hand (skeleton) but also your simplifying it by breaking it down into cube like shapes in order to understand plane breaks and mass. I would like to see some finished projects that require more time to finish. You'd learn a lot form those. Keep going!!![]()
Flanagan: thanks for stopping by my sketchbook again! Thank you for the advice! I'm a little wary of the finished pieces I guess, since I can't even sketch very well, but I'll definitely try something out soon.

Thank you for checking out my sb!
Let me say that I can see that you're very dedicated, if you keep it up like this you will soon be among the greatest (Im not one of them). and you're values are looking good! keep pushing and wish you the best of luck![]()
Check out my sketchbook
Thanks for commenting on my sketchbook, you've improve so much since your first posts. Great to see you taking some courses and learning how to render, those skills you're learning now can be transferred to digital mediums too. I recommend getting a tablet and giving that a whirl too.
Also here's a whole heap of free art book that the CA community had gathered together. Might be something in there you need.http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=94571
Thanks for coming by my sketchbook and the kind words, smallergod!
I've got no plans to be among the greatest. My main goal is to have fun and make things that I like, and be able to get my ideas onto paper. We'll see how it goes (:

Jaunay: Thanks for the comment ! Yes, I have a tablet! I'm defintiely going to start using it more. The hardest part about using the tablet for me is rendering but I'll definitely look up techniques on how to do that properly.
I'll check out the link for more art books (: i have the loomis ones on my computer already. Gotta love free shit. d:

now trying to paint in greyscale with photoshop. i was looking on the site ctrlpaint.com (seems awesome) and the 'digital painting 101' suggest using temp layers and then erasing the other parts for better gradients. this is what i have so far, although it's far from done, i'll keep working on it. if anyone could let me know how i'm doing so far that would be awesome (:

I like the use of blues on the portrait. The anatomy is off but no worries, just keep on doing portraits and study anatomy. Things will fall into place. I'm not familiar with digital art so i can't say much about the penguin. I like the gradation on the belly. Keep drawing drawing drawing!!!
