    CHoW#253 :: Wasteland Marauder

DISCLAIMER: You might notice that this weeks challenge page looks a little...bare. This is due to a new banner being made with all the new shiny rules and whatnot and at the moment I don't have access to photoshop, so watch this space! If you have any questions or queries about the rule changes and/or brief simply ask and I will do my best to answer as quickly as I can.

    Character of the Week #253
    Wasteland Marauder

-Create a design for a marauder character who wanders post-nuclear war wastelands-

    DEADLINE: SUNDAY 24th JULY 2011, 9PM GMT+1
    Check your timezone!

This weeks challenge is to create a a marauder style character who can be found wandering the wastelands of a post-nuclear war world. The world is set in our future, and is of our own cause so there are no alien or supernatural elements at work. With this said, the radiation has caused several mutations increasing attributes such as speed, size, agility and heightened senses. Prolonged exposure to the radiation has left many horribly disfigured and beyond recognition. The Marauder is part of a group who survive in these radiated wastelands. It is up to you to decide if they are amongst the mutated, disfigured or human survivors. How do they live? What measures do they take to protect themselves?

Humans are exactly what it says on the tin

Disfigured are human but think rotting, melting skin, tumors, boils etc. In fact, take a look at the splicers in Bioshock for more examples!

Mutants are still humanoid but with changes to their actual DNA so they might be massive and brute like, or have extra limbs, a tail, extended limbs. They are not like X-Men though, as they do not have abilities like starting fires or walking through walls.

    Free Topic:
This is a free topic which means you can design for whatever medium you desire be it game, film, comics or something completely different!

    The Guidelines:
    • Can be male or female
    • The allegiance of the character must be clear: Mutant, Disfigured or Human
    • No Alien or Supernatural elements
    • Must be set in the future of our own planet
    • It is a nuclear wasteland so think carefully about clothing, weapons, accessories etc as there won't be too much around
    • No military uniforms or characters. These people were not PART of the war they just survived it.
    • Can be any style or genre - But the darker you make it the better

    Reference Bible:

    THE RULES
In addition to the brief, if you do not follow these rules, you will not be included in the poll.
    • Files must be named: CHoW#253_Username
(Files with any other names such as final.jpg or even chow253final.jpg will not be accepted)
    • Finals must be posted in the finals thread BEFORE the deadline
    • Final post must include the CHoW number and the artists username at the bottom of the image
    • At least 3/4 of the focus character must be visible
    • Final images must be accompanied with a basic character sheet in a separate image
Character sheets should at the very least show a sketch of the front and back of the character and a couple of early thumbnails/silhouettes.
    • Follow the brief!

Saweet. New topic. Also thinking along the lines of Book of Eli and Desert Punk for inspiration.

I'd like to clarify something. There are three factions to choose from? Humans look completely normal, and then you have disfigured humans who are mildly mutated compared to the third option which are mutants which look full-blown mutated. Is that right?

I think mutants are more subtle and dis-figured are most noticeable? that's a good question...

Why not have mutants as your typical xmen types? Genetically altered to have abilities, and deformed being the unlucky sods who visually show degeneration. Mutants gaining, deformed losing and humans neutral.

Ahh...a barren wasteland. Just like my creative drive these days. I'm really looking forward to what the community comes up with. Here's my early sketch (it is worth posting this just so I can check 'post apocalyptic' in the attachment manager image category)...

I didnt even think about super heroes. When it says wasteland, I don't imagine this radiation is good for anyone. And did you mean an unlucky sod like this?

Haha, why yes I did. With the supers, I was thinking, xmen mix with Hancock. As in, not everyone will be a hero. These people do what what they gotta do to survive.

Well the definition of supernatural is that something happens with no explanation. Its something SUPERnatural. Mutations and powers caused by radiation is not supernatural. It has an explanation.

But you have a point anyway lol. We will just have to wait to hear from the boss.

Thats prity accurate by my understanding. This topic screams Fallout to me so heres some examples of possible factions.

Ghouls - disfigured by radiation, they live and act like normal humans only are rejected by 'normal' humans because of their looks. Some ghouls are so damaged by the radiation they become feral causing them to attack prity much anything on sight (kinda like a zombie)

mutants - Transformed by the radiation, these human like creatures are very powerful and also very violent and lust blood and gore. Other mutants are your stereotypical kind with extra limbs and weird body proportions.

Humans - Self explanatory i guess, but in Fall out their are various human tribes, some built settlements and try to live in peace, some travel in gangs killing and cannibalising human they find.

If you get a chance to play fallout 3 its great reference and a good game. Heres a link to the concept art of the game - http://fallout.bethsoft.com/eng/art/...onceptart1.php

    Hope this helps.

lol, I think I should give up sleep to keep up with these posts! logistic puppet is pretty much right on the ball.

I'll post this in the main topic for clarification.

also, cheers jumei for the spelling, I'll go through it now and change it

Heh, I'll probably not have time to finish anything this week either and wasn't going to post, but I found it funny that I also did an enlarged deformed forearm just as in DPFX's and Artfix's. It must be the number one mutation effect in postapocalyptica

Made two fast sketches. I shouldn't have started the second one on 11:30 when I had to be at work at 12:00... Dynamicly it failed. He was suppost to be mid-air, about to strike with his (genericly :/) mutated arm. His feet have mutated to make him jump really high and run extremely fast. His arm will get a rework, since his backstory was that he was a farmer, and the constant radiation blew animal DNA into his, which than made him get those dinosaur like feet and his predator arm.

The first one was a thief and a burglar, and when "the blast" happened, he was just about to break into a house. Most of his body was "protected" by the house, but his arm and the crowbar he was holding were open to the radiation, which then welded the arm and the crowbar.

Are there any rules on the type of technology we can use? obviously no Alien tech as per the rules. I only ask as it will add to the variety of what the character might have collected along the way, a near future wasteland survivor will most likely have the usual apparel, similar to Book of Eli, whilst a survivor of a nuclear wasteland in the distant future may have easier access to better technology as it would be more prevelant in their timeline, things like better breathing aparatus, more durable weapons and clothing. (obviously not too distant in the future, i suppose that could be classified as 'alien' tech as it wont be familiar to our time).

@Jamesbiff As long as the tech is still recognisable as human it's all gravy ^_^ Just keep it suitable for nature of the environments and character type

A few thumbnails before I call it a day and crash out, I felt sleep-ee so i got some cheap energy drink, after drinking it I started to feel even more tired!!!
trust me working night shift is a pain, residual sleep cravings

anyway I'm planing to go with no1, no2 has potential but its hard to attach equipment and really show off the character in that one.

I'm thinking partial mutation, but generally a regular looking guy with a baseball cap, puffer jacket and jeans. Will define goggles and maybe a gas mask at his neck. Was thinking a sad face as the symbol of his clan neither human or mutant they're stuck in the middle of a raging war
