    IOW Badge Suggestion Thread

UPDATE: Within the next week we should have the powers to give out stars, so we are now giving one more week to enter any badges you guys make, and then there will be a vote on which one to use.

Every competition here is fought for one reason only...the most important reason of all. A handful of pixels next your name.

That's right, every weekly competition here has a badge of some sorts, with stars for the number of times you won. With the start of Illustration of the Week there will need to be a new badge for the winners to proudly display.

But illustration is a very broad topic. What would best represent it in a tiny badge only a few pixels wide? That's where you come in. Leave any and all suggestions here, then the most popular one will be chosen (if several are popular there may be a poll to decide).

Nyctalgia (who made the badges for the Teen Challenge) has offered to make the badge, however if anyone out there has some experience in pixel art and some free time, feel free to mock up some suggestions and post them here.

Let's get this rolling guys and gals!

    how about:

    open book
    book cover
    palette and brush
    pen, protractor on paper
pencil and pen (crossed) over a palette, like an old school heraldry shield

The teen challenge badge is a wooden sword crossing a pencil (see ^) so perhaps a pencil/pen/brush crossing might be a bit too similar.

I think that making some kind of a book cover with pencil and a brush crossing underneath it would look cool....it's kinda some of Pat's ideas combined.

I like the idea of a book, maybe with little glowing faeries hanging out by the spine.

^Except the 'F' would be replaced with an 'I'

@Vulgar: Pagemaster! God I remember that movie, def takes me back, loved the dragon!

it seems to be a relevant idea of a book cover. Perhaps coming up with a design on the cover such as..

-a dragon (yes I'm obsessed, born in 1988, year of the dragon, I'm allowed!!!)
    -tree
-the letter I or IOW, stylised a certain way
    -mountain landscape
-some dude's head or a smiley face
-a weapon of sorts (gun, sword, etc)
    -an alien head
-pencil/pen/paintbrush/stylus or all of the above
    -a star

I'm giving some ideas that probably wouldn't work for a tiny pixel symbol but just getting some ideas out there...

Why not do what the other boards do for a mascot, have a challenge thread for the small pixel badge?,

Otherwise i would suggest a small paint brush with some paint on it.
a book ain't to bad either ( Vulgar)

I like Pat's suggestion of the open book too, but maybe with the letters 'IOW' across the two pages?

I like the book idea also. That really says 'illustration' to me.

Here's a couple I whipped up. I tried putting letters in there but I'm not so sure about that. None of the other icons do, and isn't that what an icon is for? to replace letters?

@Mr. Corlan: digging the books. Letters look fine to me - I prefer the one on the right, seems to say 'Illustration' more imo. When I was thinking of an open book, I was thinking something like Vulgar's last pic, or maybe that pic reversed to show the inside with one page of IOW text and one page illustrated - though I don't know if that's possible with the size limitations. And then out of the pages some magic is coming forth, or maybe inky tendrils.

    hey folks,

though suncuts example looks pretty nice, i guess
it would be cool not to lay down the topic 'illustration' to
the print-medium. the idea of a typographic solution would
also not fit w/ the other challenges.

so i would suggest a rather open logo like...

    - an open hand or a fist
    - a combination of a hand and tools/brushes
    - brush strokes
    - maybe a hand/pencil that is drawing a stroke

well, i know it's hard to find something because illustration
has not the symbolic character like the other challenges.
just think further and don't remain only on the book-idea.

a hand making a stroke might be cool, however imo it doesn't communicate 'illustration' to me as quite as effectively as the books.

    what are the other symbols?
    Crayon crossing brush
    Medusa smiley
    tree encircling a globe
    a funky rabbit thing
    a gear

i think that a book fits into that set nicely, as most of the icons are simple, iconic (lack of better word), and straight to the point. the holy hand of the artist could be cool as well, maybe a hand with a pen surrounded by an aura/sunburst?

I like the idea of a I with wings, a crown, or a medal in the center. Gives the idea of it being an award.

Suncut's gets my vote at the moment, and here's a quick shop of what it would look like in practice. I had to erase some of the top because it's a bit too tall, but all easily fixed.

EDIT: Well this is the BADGE suggestion thread. I just sort of glanced, saw "Suggestion" and went for it. Sorry.

Id love to get in on this stuff.

But I do have a question as a lot of my time to do painting comes on the weekends. Is there any way we can know whats coming up in advance?

Not way in advance so people have two weeks, but say on the Saturday before the Sunday things are due, any way to have an update say in this thread or the Topic Suggestion thread above this.

I ask because Id love to get started on something for this thread but its a little late to do the Crossing the marshes one but I wish I could get started on what ever is going to be the next one.

Just a thought, and there could be something like this for all I know.

I wonder what happened to the badge?

The turnout seems to have fallen after a good start, I wonder whether this might be down to the fact that the IoW winner doesn't get a badge to show off in the forums. Not that everyone would hunt for it, but it might put possible participants off.. I don't know.

Nyctalgia and I would give badges, we really would love to have people show them off, but at the moment we do not have the appropriate powers (we only have mod powers and not admin powers). Jason Manley hasn't been responsive to our PM's, so it doesn't look like it will change any time soon. My only suggestion is for people to send off a PM bringing the issue up to him--if enough people start asking for it then something may get done.

For me personally, the badges aren't really that important, but that could be simply because i haven't won any, lol. Though i could definitely understand peoples reasons for wanting them, especially if they have won challenges. My lack of partition lately is simply lack of time, real projects have had to take priority. Plus i do prefer a challenge, lock me up in a wooden box with 2 holes, a pipe cleaner and a piece of wool, then tell me to escape and then build a tank from scratch, all in less than 2 minutes, and thats when i'm most happiest, lol

We're almost there! The ability to hand out badges is being granted to us!

That means it's time to decide on a badge! We already have two submissions, with Suncuts being the most favored. But I'm giving you a week to come up with your own. So throw in your submissions and we'll decide in a week!
