W.I.P. Creature Design

So this was something I just started drawing with no plan in mind (as you can probably tell!) so the canvas obviously needs to expanded to bring in the rest of his body and I need to so something with the background as well. I was wondering what people thought of it and if there there were any ideas on where to take it, and more importantly what I can improve on with it. I've not done many (4) digital images so I have a hell of a lot to learn about the process too.

A strong direction for the light source will describe the forms better so people can tell what is going on.

Thanks dpaint, that is a good point. I started to suggest the light coming from the right-hand side, but there is no specific source right now so I need to rectify that as you say and give this image some flesh. Also, I will probably make the light less pure white as well.
