I'd buy that for a dollar! Henri's sketchbook

Hi and thanks for dropping by.

My name is Henri Kutvonen, I'm 22 and been drawing since early 2009 after years and years of ignoring it. I did sorta have a six month break last year, but I pulled myself together after New Year, crawled into my crypt to dedicate my life to art. I haven't seen the sun in months, I've turned into a completely pale Nosferatu look-alike, lost all my friends while surviving by eating bacteria and insects crawling on my Wacom.

That last part is not true.

But anyway here's some personal stuff of late, starting with a self-portrait

    Thanks Austen!

It's been a while... I had some bad luck early this month with my hard drive going kaput. I did have some backups but lost most of my stuff, which is a bit annoying.

Still, haven't been slacking off, here's some environment studies

a doodle after drawing a bunch of buff naked dudes

a sketch of a bloke walking his dog. I eyeballed the perspective so it's probably completely off. I'll need to fix it before rendering

and something more finished. I might do some more work on it. a bit bored looking at it though

    Cheers

For reference, here's a portrait of Jason Pierce I did back in November 2008 when Spiritualized played here. One of my first digital paintings.

Jesus Christ, it's been like a month and a half again •_•

I promise to update this more frequently from now on. It's just that I've been working on so many paintings simultaneously and not finishing any of them.

Here's some work I've done while watching through all the 70 or so Columbo films. First some creeps for a digitally reconstructed Charles Bronson to deal with in Death Wish 6, then a half man, half deer mutant with nunchaku, and some knob twiddler by a contaminated river.

    Cheers

You have a really good painting style. Color choices are excellent and your sense of lighting and weight is particularly inspiring. Thanks for posting these; let's see some more.

    I envy your edge work.
    soooo sharp.
Do you use the lasso tool or do paint it like that right of the bat?
Might wanna watch those hands, though.
Something about the wrists always seems a little weird

No, I don't really use the lasso tool. I think it's just a matter of managing my layers effectively (usually it's a layer per character or a large object, foreground, middleground and background, which is usually just the sky or a wall or something) and then using a hard or a soft eraser depending on the situation. It really saves you a lot of time if for instance you want to move an object 200 pixels to the left, and there's already stuff behind it. But often I mess up the layer order couple of hours in and get in trouble ._.

I'll try to keep an eye on the arms. Haven't done any accurate studies in a while, just a bunch of 2-5 minute figures and I think it shows.

wicked style... you have a scary brain. subscribed!

edit* ok, one crit - some of the newer characters (Charles Bronson fodder), and my apologies if this is style choice, look kind of flat. I like their design quality but the lighting lighting value is leaving me wanting.
