    Jake Bullock 260/10,000

So, new stuff. Working on a fun illustration atm. Well, started it anyway. Should make more sense soon enough.
This is all from the last few days.

    Loomis Stuff

    Construction Studies

    Self Portraits

They're so horribly inconstistent. I need to really try and get the drawings right more I'm sure. I'm just not accurate at all.

    Imagination stuff

And a super early sketch of this illustration

So, this is 200HRs, if anyone cares

Fuck, I feel like I should have been working harder for all that time. Definitely need to sorta look back and work out what I'm going to do from now on. Kinda floating around doing random bits at the moment.

    Anyway, Today's stuff...

    Self Portrait

    Study

And a bit more work on that illustration. Not sure the gesture's working. But, I really have no idea what I'm doing... So yeah.

Actually.... Anyone got any tips for working on colour? I'm just so inaccurate, and I never seems to realise until too late. Guessing it's just something that'll become easier as I work on stuff for longer though.

Been a while. I started a Graphic Design job last week, and did some temp work this weekend, so I've been kinda rushed off my feet. Got bits done here and there though. Here goes.

    Sketchbook dump
    Mostly imagination stuff.

    Self Portraits

    Studies

And I got this far with the lawnmower thing before deciding I hated it

    So I recomped it

    That's all

So, I seem to have got out of the habit of actually posting. Sorry internet. Here goes...

    Loomis

Self Portraits (still daily - just about)

And some progress on the lawnmower thingy. I really have no idea what I'm doing. Terrified of illustrations. Just feel like I'm fumbling around randomly hoping something works. Once I've finished this I'm gonna do some plain character design I think. I over reached this time.

Figured I'd chuck in a detail shot, because the image is massive
I made a kid look like a goblin...

    More stuff.

Sketchbook doodles, mostly from the commute to work, in the car.

    Self Portraits

Study. Wanted to look at how hair works in the sun. And trying to go from greyscale to colour again. Think it's probably more accurate, but it looks worse. Who knows?

And the current state of this:

I see you tryin'. Don't give up man. It will feel like some days you are drawing and nothing is improving. Just do a set amount of work a day and it will be alright.
Do a lot of work and your work will be as good as your ambitions.

Eternal Apprentice - Yeah, cheers. I'm trying to keep it up. I'll get there .

Done a load of posemaniacs, but tbh.. fuck uploading those from now on though. You'll have to take my word that they exist.
    So, sketchbook stuff

    Self Portraits

    Hedge Study

And what I think is going to be the final version of this. Time to move on I think. Love to know what you guys think. Hopefully whatever I do next will suck less.

Realised I had no idea what wings look like. (thanks Wolken)

And today's self portrait, only lit with the light from my laptop. Kinda fun.

THIS POST PUTS ME PAST 300 HOURS (if anyone's wondering) :)

    Loomis

Some more work on this blokey

    Self Portrait #43

Decided I'm going to focus on line drawing the rest of this month now. Bored of getting half way through a painting and realising the drawing was fucked.

So, a line drawing study, which kinda got out of hand

    And a Self P

Any line work tips would be appreciated greatly

More line work. Gonna stick with it for the rest of the month now I think.

    So without further ado...
    Smiley Bale

    Self Portrait

Drinking and realising I pull a "serious" face when doing self portraits... oops.

    And another study

Not sure if these are gonna help. But they sure are fun. Love line work.

Trying to imagine a walk, based on the study. Kinda fun, think I learnt some stuff at least.

Had to draw this. I mean, come on, look at it... fuckin' adorable.

And some blokey in a cowboy hat from DA

    That's all for now

So, dead couple of days. Was out most of Sunday, and back at work today. Long day, means not a lot of work done. But, keeping up with the self portraits.

    Here

    And here (Ouch my neck)

So, spent a huge chunk of today animating this:

    Name: first step.gif
Views: 170
Size: 99.5 KB

It's nothing, but I've never done frame by frame animation before. And it's a time sync. More to come.

Character doodle before the animation. Loose basis for the animated dude.

    Studies

Self Portraits. Hit 50 last night.

Gonna try and cut down the time I spend on these for a while. Need to get faster. This one was 30 mins

And been working on this dude today. Just a bit of a doodle.

So, been away from home over the weekend, back now though, with a few things..

As always, self portraits (not sure how much these are helping, but I'm treating them as speed studies now. And I said I'd do 100, so I'm gonna do 100 god dammit. So, yeah...)

I cannot apologise enough for this one. Not sure what happened, just wasn't concentrating i think. :/ Ho hum. Next time.

Thumbnailing an idea I have sitting in the back of my head.

    And some studies

Plus started this before the weekend, might try and finish it tomorrow. Basically trying to draw my room as if I was sat up in the top corner, looking down. Bit of a challenge, good fun though.

Oh, and can't forget! Sunk another couple of hours into this little guy

    Self Portrait

Studies, trying to speed up a bit.

    Bit of a longer one

And some character design, this would be the character to go with the thumbnails a bit above.

Hey Jake! I suggest you drop the focus on line because they are already very very good and confident. Maybe you are willingly staying in your comfort zone and that is not so good for your progress Try do some shading excersizes (gradients, hard/soft edges etc.) or something along the lines You are on good way, just keep it up!
My sketchbook - Please, help me grow Critique very appreciated

And some Sketchbook stuff. Wanna get back into doing more of this..

Nasty, tried to do a fast one, like 45 mins.. Didn't go so well.

Finally finished this blokey. 12.5 hours I think. Learnt a ton. Huge help. Cheers everyone who said I should do this. Definitely put it off for too long.

    Then some posemaniacs

    And some sketches....

Ok, so last few days . Focusing on colour for a bit now.
    Self Portraits

    Speedy Tiny Colour Studies

    Gesture/figure studies
    30secs

    5/15mins

    30 mins

    And the same from imagination

    Some recent sketchbook stuff.

And a little portrait doodle I started this evening. Thinking about the palette more in this.

So, recent stuff. Was working the first half of this week, so not a lot to show. I've been busy though. Kinda. Today was a nice break as well.

Back to uni this weekend, so expect a lot more stuff, even if it's a bit more varied

    So yeah, self portraits.

And some speedy colour studies, 15 mins or something.

Been working on some sketchbook stuff as well this week. I'll get that scanned and up tomorrow probably.

Interesting sketchbook you have here. You have a wide array of studies going on here. I see that you focus pretty heavily on the portraiture, and you are showing vast improvements over the stuff you posted on the first page. That's good! I wish I had that kind of dedication to portraits.

One thing I might recommend is paying really close attention to your edge treatment. To my eye, it looks like you treat all your edges with a sharpness to them. This tends to give a lot of your paintings a plastic-y feel. Try softening edges in shadows and edges in the distance. Pay attention to what is your center of attention, and push the edge sharpness there, and don't worry so much about keeping things highly detailed in the non-focus areas.

Good luck and keep working hard! A very prolific SB here!

    Hey there Jake,
Great sketchbook! Fun to look through, great dedication.

The line art studies were nicely done, you can tell you enjoy doing them. 'blokey' was my favorite though.
Keep up the good work, never give up.

Ill be checking in more often! :p
