    Chris' portfolio

My name is Christopher Rees, i am in the second year of an arts course and have been drawing for almost 3 years, though much more seriously recently. I, like many others in the art scene want to one day become a concept artist so please feel free to critique!

I use Photoshop to do all my illustration.

You need to work on Gesture, proportion and composition. Your rendering abilities are okay, but it get's pretty muddy when you introduce color and atmosphere. The anatomy is a little siff and dysfuctional. I think you should push your ideas further, because there's potential, but it's still pretty generic work. It's too heavily influeced by Wes Burt and Kevin Chen. Don't get me wrong, but you need to stand out from the competition.

Here are some remedies I've found to these problems.
Branch out and find inspiration from other genres. Study Loomis, Vilpu, Bridgeman, The Animators Survival Guide, How to draw the Marvel Way etc. Draw from life, I'd emphasize quick sketches, abstraction and construction.

Many thanks Raoul. I do not know those 2 artists but i agree that my work is rather generic and really needs to be developed and i think i have spent too much of my time learning how to render and recently i have seen how this was a bad choice. though i suppose now i can mainly focus on developing my characters and landscapes. Will be uploading more as i do them and ill be sure to work on the things you mentioned, thanks again.
