[Black Spot]

Looks like you're over thinking the muscles a bit. I get to go life drawing when I can, which isn't as often as I'd like, sometimes 3 weeks on a trot and then nothing for 6 months. I found that when you realise you're there to learn and not impress people is when the good stuff starts coming. My last one, I arrived with nothing with me so had to use the shit stuff laid out, made a total mess and thoroughly enjoyed myself.

Black Spot: I feel ya on the not impressing people bit. I think I've pretty much gotten passed that at this point, which is why I've persisted in using charcoal with and underhand grip. Also, not too certain on what you mean about thinking too much with the muscles?

Your studies are amazing... I was wondering, how do you get your colors for your studies? Do you mix them with the primary colors, or eyeball them and lay them down? I'm trying to get better at getting the right colors for the job and am having a bit of trouble doing that. If you could stop by my sketchbook and give me some pointers that would be ace!

your digital work is so *juicy*, the colours/form etc! You nailed the colours on that female nude (the greens in the shadows etc).

You seem to be the opposite of me, quite light handed in your pencil work concentrating more on where things need to be (which is generally good). Would be great to see more contrast in your pencil (get your 7b out). Total suggestion that I'm curious to see the results

That apple is actually a very nice piece... it's not an illustration; it's a good swing at a volumetric representation of an apple, in a fine-art sense.

Ian Barker: Thanks for the suggestion. I've started playing around with them a little here and there, but I'll work on it some more.

KateyParr: Thank you and yes you are right about the pencil work. I was using regular art pencils last year (I use a 0.5 mechanical draft pencil with 2H lead), but my work looked so messy and smeared too easily. However, I should probably just bite the bullet and use a paper napkin.

p sage: Thank you. That's nice to hear as I've really been trying to think back on how I used to paint with acrylic years ago. I've even gone so far as to use a brush with no opacity and just layering the colors to get a decent gradation.

Time to update...been a while, but I'm still drawing everyday, although I have slacked off a little the past couple of weeks. I work in a group home for the developmentally disabled and one of our individuals died (he was young) and it took us all by surprise. I usually have quite a bit of time to draw at work, but with this and some other challenges I'm experiencing right now, I just haven't been as motivated. But, I'm getting back into the groove of things.

Anyways, here's a bit of an art dump from my sketch and two digital works.

Looks good! Lovely update and I don't think your work really suffers without the contrast at all. You're clearly comfortable with what your using and it shows. I love how much detail you manage to put in and that's great.
I can't draw ANYTHING with a mechanical pencil so I'm pretty mind blown how u manage this.

The 'acrylic way of thinking' that you talked about clearly worked - I guess that's why the paintings turned out so vibrant and full of colour- good job

KateyParr: Thanks again. It does take a long time with the mechanical pencil and the artists who I like the most (like Alex Ross, Wesley Burt, etc) all seem to be using regular art pencils to get such broad strokes with their shading.

Also, some more art. I really wasn't going to post these unfinished still life's I did in the past few months because I didn't like how they were turning out, so I quit on them. But, I spent time on them so I'm gonna post them anyway . Critiques are welcome.

Great life studies again! The only suggestion I can think of right now is that you could do some studies in natural light too.

The life studies are really nice, and the soft colors on your nude model are brilliant. Really communicates the idea of soft skin, which is a hard thing to do I find.

I like the still lives but each object lacks individual texture - they all look plastic. Highlights are not always a blurry blob. I see this a lot with digital, when your pencils are quite different.

Hey bishop you mega troll you! lol great updates man!! thanks for your comments on my sketchbook. I'm actually using an anatomy book called atlas of the human body by stephen rogers peck.
It is incredibly thorough. and I sit and drone sketches from it every so often.

I have to agree with Black Spot in her latest comment but I have to say in your defence also that not everyone does a study to finish in high detail. I for instance have a big tendency to do a study and bounce when I have achieved what I set out to capture/learn, so the majority of my stuff are rough! keep at it dude! looking forward to more.

#315 - Such a good post; I see major improvements in your imaginative drawings from your earlier posts.

#318 - That apple came out kinda weird, it looks squashed and it doesn't have the big pit at the top that most apples(if not all apples) do. Otherwise pretty nice studies.

Also, I gotta disagree with Black Spot; with the exception of maybe the fruit, I think you're doing a quite decent job distinguishing your textures, and you haven't even completely refined most of them.
