Thanks for checking out my sketchbook. Just started drawing again back in May of 2011 after I had quit for 4 years. Didn't think I would pick up it again, but here I am. This was also my first time with digital, as I mainly come from a traditional background (although I didn't get very far). I minored in drawing and painting (majored in Psychology...which was a waste of time) and I didn't work with color for very long.

At this point, I'm teaching myself and using all of the resources I can find over the internet. I do plan to go back to school for art eventually.... at least part time to take some classes, but that won't happen for a while, so my development as an artist may take longer than I would like.

Feedback and criticisms are welcome. Also, I will do my best to offer constructive criticisms to you all as well.

Here is my morning work.

The first 2 are warm up gesture drawings using Posemaniacs.

The landscape is a 10 minute study from reference, using only 3 brushes because I want to get better with them.

The figure is a value study from ref...about an hour or so. I would like to eventually spend more time on it.

Edit: Added pictures from the first post so that I don't have to keep rearranging the first post every time I change my thumbnail.

You're really doing well, and your shading is lovely. My only issue really is that your figures are a little too stilted. Perhaps if you try squiggling out figures without lifting your pen often? Draw real loose and try to say to yourself that it's just a picture, who cares if it's perfect.

post 1 render is good..but i really couldn't comprehend why all the being do upload all such sketches which did not prove fruitful for them..just do work for them which would possibly show what you got till now..now why should i upload all the heaps of random drawings..why not chosen one which contain all the previous elements of your drawing..

@Telephonescope: Thanks for the critique. I've been trying to work on things like looseness since starting to draw again and keeping my pen on the paper. Very hard habit to break.

@jaywalk: Thank you. I haven't been focusing on one thing as much as I should...with the exception of last week, which I pretty much drew a bunch of legs. I wanted to keep this sketchbook as recent as possible and most of my recent stuff is random doodles. I'm trying to slow down now and just focus on a few things.

I'm going to post a few more random things from what I have done since starting again last month. These include some sketches and some Photoshop paintings.

I don't know how to post descriptions above each painting, so I'll have to do them in different posts.

Here are 3 drawings from imagination that I did when I first started back...they still have that stiffness about them as well as a bunch of other problems that I can see now.

The quality of the scans are horrible...but I spent all night scanning them in so I'm posting them. I'll figure out how to do a better job over the weekend.

Here are 3 photoshop paintings from last month. The Cyborg is my favorite, but not finished. The tree was a study I did, but somehow came out looking really cartoonish. I think that I was just learning about overlay and multiply layers at the time.

This was also my first attempt at a cave...the columns are crooked, but I didn't see it at the time. I will rework this one in the future.

Here are 3 more. A landscape attempt...about 4 hours plus...I couldn't really convey the depth that I wanted and the mountains didn't turn out the way I wanted them to. I like the colors though.

The cyborg was a quick painting (1 hour)...I got the idea came to me after watching another video using the same techniques. I started off with color (instead of attempting grayscale first like I normally do). I find it easier to paint this way, but I would like to learn grayscale first.

The knight is something I'm working on after watching Braveheart and I will probably change the composition of the entire pic.

And finally, 2 studies and 1 figure that I'm working on. The eye study is from a few weeks ago. The arm study and figure is from last night. Again, my scanning abilities are horrible at this point, so bear with me.

The figure sketch is from memory, but something I wanted to do after watching Spartacus (I will add some armor in later). Had some trouble with the legs and my knowledge on back anatomy is limited, so I may wait on this one until I do some studies. But, I just wanted to put an idea down for future reference.

I personally like your eyes drawing study, I'm currently practicing with drawing eyes as well but I always stuck with the cartoonish style, lol. Keep up the good work

You got some wicked stuff here man. I love your more fleshed out figure studies. Any tips on actually drawing the figure? Or do you just kinda 'go with the flow'?

Icarus: Thanks for the comp! No tips really except to practice. I'm still learning myself, but what really helped me the most was learning the basic shapes of humans. I studied Jack Hamm's book Drawing the Head and Figure a while ago and I think he has some really good basic shapes. It's not as complicated as Loomis' mannikin and you can see the major differences between males and females.

I've decided to not post all of my studies here, but I've still been drawing everyday. I also decided to take my time on the drawings as impatience was killing me. I want to get faster, but I've also realized that painting digitally is not going to make me that much faster.

Anyways, here is a new study that I finished today.

Hell yeah man! Nice batch of studies in these latest posts. This value study figure looks fkn great. I hear ya on the whole needing to slow down and take your time thing. Too often I find myself rushing on a study and screwing it up because I want to get to the final result faster >_<

MBK: Thanks again, man. Yeah, it's very tempting to draw fast...especially after watching the speed painting videos. I constantly have to remind myself that the video is purposely sped up and the artists aren't really painting that fast.

Canibalcarnival: Thanks...this is exactly what I need to hear and I agree with you. I actually started thinking about working on my colors more than anything else. Your post solidifies this.
