great studies, keep going! And i got to agree with Scizzorhäns, that jellyfish is really good!
great studies, keep going! And i got to agree with Scizzorhäns, that jellyfish is really good!
Today i've got back my drawings from during this schoolyear.
The first one is done with watercolors. It is based on the Island of the death by A. böcklin. Second drawing is graphite on a4
I'll upload more soon
Man, your architectural drawings are just awesome. The watercolor painting in the last post is very nice as well. For your figures, one thing I feel like you have consistent trouble with is the width of the hips and length of the torsos. You tend to make the hips rather small proportionally when compared to the size of the torso, and you occasionally make the torsos a bit long and stretched out (or sometimes a little short but more often they're too long), so I would suggest that you pay specific attention to those measurements in proportion to each other when doing figure studies. Anyway, great sketchbook so far; keep up the good work!![]()

Fantastic to see all the hard work you put into your anatomy sketches ... I keep saying I'm going to do some anatomy studies ... but I never seem to get around to doing anything about it. Keep up the awesome updates!

Dierat : Thanks for pointing this out. I always had the feeling something was wrong with my figure studies.
Now that I look back at them i can see what you're saying; the women's and men's hips are way too small and the distance between ribcage and the pelvis is too big, right? I never noticed this before, and i'll try to fix the problem (:
Also, thank you for the compliments!
shambok : thank you! I do my best to keep doing anatomy studies because I know i still have a long way to go.. thx for passing by!
another two sketches from school..Both graphite (HB) on a4
Sry for the big size
This is the same drawing as in post #62
I painted it again on a much bigger format (A1 instead of A4)
The second one is a sky view of Ghent (Belgium)
Did some ref. drawings by the Bone doctor ( Michael Mentler )
This man really is a genius!
It has been three months now since my previous update, and a lot of tings have changed. I'm now studying digital arts and entertainment and i've bought a wacom tablet (finally :p)

The first two paintings are done for the daily sketch group and the teen challenge. The third one is a speedpaint with reference as a study in values.
The latest one is done for a school assignment. We have to design a submarine cleaning robot thingy (sry for the huge pic)

I'll try from now on to keep this sketchbook updated every few days/weeks
Nice values on those watercolor enviros.
Keep posting

Very cool update; I'm curious to see where you go from here with your digital work. For a crit, you might want to ease up on the black a bit. In the mountainous landscape image, the atmospheric perspective could handle being more gradual. The dark shadows in the middle ground (which appear to be very far away) appear to be just as dark as the dark shadows in the foreground. In general, it's best to use pure white and pure black sparingly, for the areas where no light could reach. The dark areas on those mountain peaks should be receiving quite a bit of reflected light and atmospheric light (in addition to being somewhat lighter due to their distance from the viewer). Personally, I would suggest that you try doing regular painting studies from observation to help you master the medium and your use of values. Anyway, great work, keep posting, and happy new year!![]()

Woo those buildings are sexy! Keep it coming
Knut, Dark_Eyes, WRappiii : Thanks! I'll do my best to keep this SB up-to-date (:
Dierat : Thanks for taking the time to give some advice, I really appreciate it!
For the mountain painting, i didn't really pay much attention to the lightning and the use of pure black and white ( I wasn't aware ). I'll keep it in mind for future paintings and I will do some regular studies ad you suggested.

For my exams of 3D I had to make a low poly cityscene based on Taiwan.
I'll upload a 360° render (video) soon

It has been a month since i my last update, but i've been practicing digital painting a bit.
The first pic was an assignment for school, it's based on the shoppingcenter 'The K' in Courtrai (Belgium).
Second one was an entry for the DSG, and the last pic are speedpaints I made..
It was time for me to do some photostudies of the human body..
I have to get rid of the scribbly lines, but I find it hard to draw the contours in one single and correct line D:
Use a ruler when you're doing the architectural drawings (that's what all architects do, so don't be afraid that it's cheating or whatever). Also, I would like to see you try a design of your own building first as a design document, and then rendered as a 3d model (i sound like i'm assigning you that, haha. do whatever you want of course, just my suggestion). Those seem to be your strongest points at the moment, and something showing that you can see a design through from start to finish would look good in your portfolio. If you're interested in pursuing that kind of work for games especially, then I would recommend doing some environment studies as well.. some nice locations to place your badass building concepts.
Anyways that's just my first impression of what you might want to try, good luck to you and keep up the hard work
edit: oh and when you're painting remember that shadows aren't black! when you use black it makes the image look muddy and unappealing. experiment with different colors (notice the 3d render shadows are blue). there are laws of nature that determine the color of shadows, but you will learn as you study, for now just observe and experiment![]()
Liffey: Thanks for this feedback! I'm not sure about using a ruler. I always thought it was important not to use a ruler because otherwise i would never learn to draw straight lines. Atm I only use a ruler to draw my perspective grid.
For the 3d concept, I actually did make some kind of design document. I made some thumbs of the top-down view. After I chose the best thumb I drew some details and props for the scene.
Then i drew a street-level view and then I began modeling and texturing.
I'll surely do some environment studies to improve my digital painting skills (which I lack a lot :p).
Thank you again for taking the time to write the comment, it helps me a lot![]()
Is that a Bocklin study up there? I remember seeing it up close at Old Gallery in Berlin. Beautiful piece. Also, I remember one called Portrait of the Artist with Death Playing the Fiddle (or something on those lines); another extremely powerful work.
You've got a good sketchbook. I like the recent figure studies. They are well captured, yet loose, so good work on those. Also good to see you trying complicated environments, they will definitely pay off in the future.
Keep the works coming Jarkuzy.
Vritra: Yes it's a study of Bocklin. That's pretty neat you saw it in Berlin (: I remember there are five versions of 'Die Toteninsel', I love the 'dramatical' feeling of the work. He was a real great artist
Also, thank you for these compliments, it's these kind of comments that keep me going! I realise there's not really much to see in this sketchbook but i'll definitly try to change that!

Here's a little speedpaint from today (50min)
Small church in graveyard
I like your environments, especially that DSG with the pointed boulders. And those watercolours, never get tired of seeing anything with watercolour in it! Keep it up!

Rob Powell Thanks! It's great hearing that from someone like you (: I'm glad you like them. For the moment i'm focusing on digital painting but maybe in the future i'll do some more watercolors.

I made a study of a still from Game of thrones (Episode 10)
I did some experimenting with the lasso tool

you nailed it. The radio looks sweet. And Your talent lies in enviros as well..
nice work
wish i went to school like you bro...keepupthe hard work!
This last page is great! i really liked that watercolor painting you did of Arnold Böcklin's piece, it came out very nice, those buildings with Gothic architecture are nice too, i also like you 3D stuff, specially that render you did of the radio, keep it up man![]()
Pitchblack Thank you for the kind words!
Gpozzo Thanks! I'm working now on a car model (3D), I'll post it soon
