God knows whats going on here...random speedpaint madness

Those robotos up top are inspiring me!! the scale feels awesome, the pose on the right is really something! great work!
oooo robots- what more do ya need?
@Rhubix & @sic-side-fx - thanks, you can never have too many giant robots...
Been going back thru old CHOW, COW, etc topics for inspiration. This is a sketch for an old COW topic 'Arctic Warbeast'. I'm gonna put some orthos in the white space on the right, but here it is for now...

Nice sketchbook so far! I really like the looseness and the color choices - very exciting and energetic pieces. I especially like the last piece in post #1 - cool atmosphere there, feels professional. Keep it up!
Thanks @RedOwl!
Here is a little vehicle design thing, using SketchUp and Photoshop for paint job

I like the arctic warbeast the most, a little rendering on the head went a long way on that one.
Thanks @GeniusFetus!
Quick environment sketch:

Is the arctic beast your own invention? If so, I'm not sure what those mammoth-style tusks would be functional for (mammoths used their tusks to shovel through snow to get to grass, but your beast appears to be a carnivore).
Hey there,
Here are a few bits from a film project I did concepts and storyboards for:

Really like the storyboards, nice fun angles and color. And the arctic warbeast! Hard to say based on the pieces you have here, but I think you could benefit from finding a central focus to your pieces. The quickie environment in particular, if the buildings were your intended focus I'd spend a little bit more time there than anywhere else, right now my eye still flies all around the painting because it has nowhere to settle. Obviously this is nitpicking, I just don't like to leave a sketchbook without a crit![]()
Thanks Carakhan. Yeah that environment sketch is pretty sloppy, I will prob go back and tidy up at some point. Thanks for dropping by!
Thanks @BrandonPilcher for the tip on the arctic warbeast!

Very nice and conceptual. Your work is good at maintaining energy.
love those riot cop ideations, as well as the top robots! some of your digital stuff feels like its got the basic comps in place, but lack a finished feeling ( i know its a sketchbook ) but still feel like some could be taken a bit further. but i love the ideas man.

@n1frit! - thank you!
Appreciate all the crits people! Thank you!
Here are some quick rough sketches for current Environment of the Week (floating hotel at sunset), about an hour each. I used the pen tool on these to try and get some nice clean curved forms.

Wow man, love your SB!![]()
If you dont mind explaining, can you sum up how you did your sketches of the cities for the EOW? Just how you start up and stuff like that.
Keep up the good work!

Happy to share process! Here you go:
First up, this is just a quick sketch to help generate some rough ideas for a more detailed design/composition, so at this stage its very random and unplanned. I had a basic idea for a dubai style curvy building with lots of reflective surface and showing it from an exciting angle but thats about it.
1. Started with a overall light value as this is a sunset
2. Started blocking in horizon and light source with a soft brush.
3. Using the pen tool, started making random 'sail' shapes, converting them into selections (right click, convert path to selection) and filling them in as flat shapes. I erased into these a lot as well, hence weirdness here:
4. Randomly exploring shapes for the building as above
5. Using a hard brush added some sweeps of white and dropped the opacity right down, to start defining some volume on the building form. I find hard brush gives a nice chrome look.
6. As above, added a few little spot highlights. Technically in terms of lighting this is a bit all over the place as the sun is behind the building but hey, its a super quick sketch!
7. Added a new layer in colour mode and started brushing in some orange hues, also some complementary colour (blue) on the building for some colour contrast. It looks very washed out at present but will fix that in a minute
8. Started scrubbing in some clouds using a big textured brush. This is done very roughly in several layers and then opacity dropped right down. Using a mix of the main colour and its complementary.
9. Blocking in some darker shapes on the building and added some highlight seems to help define volume
10. Quickly selected some lights from a photo of a skyscraper, warped and distorted them a bit to fit and added as a new layer, using the 'Lighten' layer blend mode. For a quick thumbnail like this there's not much point spending ages hand painting each light in.
11. Dropped a flat orange all over it on a low opacity to warm it up and bring everything into a closer colour range, also added in some white with a soft brush (again with very low opacity) over the building to help push is back in the image, via atmospheric perspective
12. Added in a sun and scribbled in some details on the ground
13. Added a little spaceship (well more like a blob) so there's something in the foreground, and repeated some tiny ones to establish the distance and scale of the building. Added a 'Levels' adjustment layer and tweaked the black levels to warm everything up and make the colours more saturated.
So there's you go, about an hour in total and then onto the next one.
Hope this helps dude!
